iTunes Review

This solo release from Radiohead singer Thom Yorke finds him temporarily stepping away from his band, but without venturing too far off stylistically, as if he stole away with his laptop but stayed within earshot of rehearsal. The precisely layered music is almost entirely electronic—twitchy beats, stark samples, synthesizers, and assorted blips—with Yorke’s distinctive voice always upfront, clear, and intimate, the lyrics throughout provocative and imaginative. With few tempos changes, each song builds to a steady groove and then stays there for the duration, and though this leaves the album short on surprises, The Eraser achieves a continuity and stark beauty that allows it to work well as either a headphone album or as background music for a low-key party. Yorke is not attempting to make a great departure from his work with the band (the album was created with help from Nigel Godrich, who produced much of Radiohead’s output) so the overall sound will be familiar to loyal fans. But this is no mere filler until the next Radiohead release. The Eraser is strong enough to stand on its own and offers a fascinating, if dark, look into both Yorke’s world and ours.

A thing of beauty.

There cannot be many people in the world at the current time who are more respected or who are held in more awe than Thom Yorke. And he has earned this respect with his work with Radiohead, who are possibly the only popular forward thinking band who also happen to have released two of the greatest albums of all time in "OK Computer" and "Kid A". Both full to the brim with beauty, anger, angst; emotions that every day people can relate to, and clearly do. This solo album is also full of the very same things that make Radiohead succesful, but succeeds in a different way. The inspiring musicianship of the other members of the band is obviously lacking, but it works anyway. There is beauty, and biting sarcasm in abundance... Much to my delight; the sarcasm is one of the things I love so much about Thom's lyrics. "Harrowdown Hill" is the standout track for me; a tribute to Dr David Kelly - the government scapegoat who killed himself at the location that is the song's title. It is bitter, angry, beautiful but ultimately utterly, utterly sad. There has not been a more poignant or powerful song written in musical history. As for the album, it is full of thrills and delicious musical treats, and deserves a place alongside the great Radiohead albums. Five stars.

Fascinating, thoughtful and not a little strange

Listeners familiar with Radiohead's recent albums will recognise the sound of 'Eraser' straight away; and much of the fascination of listening to this album is realising 'So that's what Radiohead would sound like without Jonny's guitar'. As always, Thoms lyrics are profound, contemporary and poetical; rooted firmly in current events and issues ("Harrowdown Hill" is the name of the place where Dr David Kelly, scientist in the midst of the UK's 'weapons of mass destruction' debacle, comitted suicide). The music is strongly electronic with only a few noticeable guitar riffs, and this will put off many; but get past this and there is that eerie beauty that keeps us coming back to listen to the tunes and thoughts inside of Thom's head.

Forget the fact it's Thom Yorke and listen to it.

This is a case of the Emporers new clothes. People assume that because its Thom Yorke, it MUST be shear genius. Not at all. A fan of most of Radiohead's albums, and seeing them live more than 5 times, I can honestly say that this is nothing spectacular. I think Thom's Ego has proceeded him, and that he can churn out anything a little "off the wall" and expect to be hugely appreciated for it. I ask of people to be wary of this, liking something for the chracter behind it rather than the music itself. Ask yourself, if this wasn't Thom Yorke, would you still be rating it as high. My answer is certainly NO.
