Album Review

Although record sales never went along with it, Free were British rock at its pinnacle. Their studio albums were superb through and through, while the one live release perhaps represented the band at their peak. This best-of features the cream of Free's releases up to 1973. Extending past the easily accessible rock tracks into the realms of the bands quieter acoustic moments, as well as the more experimental areas of Free's material, The Free Story gives the whole picture of what Rogers, Kirke, Fraser, and Kossoff were about. The track selection well shows off the bands musical ability, from Paul Kossoff's vibrato-laden guitar to Andy Fraser's captivating bass playing. Indeed, few bands come close to the overall musicianship of Free. "Free left a legacy of enduring music which became a role model for much of which followed...The Free Story is testament to that heritage," declares the album notes. Few would disagree with that statement.

A Free Introduction

Contrary to popular myths I was there and I do remember Free when the were just about the coolest band there was. I can even remember buying this album when it was a limited edition vinyl offering and it sounds as good now as it did then. It's amazing how few people outside that generation have heard of the band, but If you've never heard Free before, then this is for you..... Just listen and enjoy Paul Kossoff's wonderful guitar, he's sadly missed.

Rodgers better than Plant? I think so...not to be missed!!

People might testify that Rodger's recent role as the 'replacement' as sorts for the man who is quite possibly the greatest front man and band leader in rock and roll history, are indeed testement to his singing ability. I personally didn't think anyone could replace Freddie Mercury, but the sheer strength of Rodgers voice and stage presence have proven otherwise, he is beyond a replacement, beyond a stand-in, he has brought new life to those songs. BUT, when you listen to this album, the amalgamation of Free's best work, you realise that Rodgers was probably the greatest singer of his generation, even surpassing Plant and Daltrey. I believe he pulled off the moody swagger more effectively than Plant, and also the sheer strength and power more admirably than Daltrey. And thats not even mentioning the sheer power of Kirke's drumming, the soaring yet mournful playing of Kossoff and everything else that drove these simple, blues inspired numbers. This is a classic, not to be missed, a lesson in simplicity, a seminar in the power of rock. The benchmark.

Bought one of the first 50000 on vinyl

Bought this album in 1973 upon its original release. Sad to see that the market is now flooded with Free compendiums. This remains the original and the best. No Free compendium will ever do justice to the enormous range of the band but if determined to remain in the compendium arena this remains the best. The album is worth buying for the comprehensive history of the band that (certainly used to be) part of the package.

Biography

Formed: 1968 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s

Famed for their perennial "All Right Now," Free helped lay the foundations for the rise of hard rock, stripping the earthy sound of British blues down to its raw, minimalist core to pioneer a brand of proto-metal later popularized by 1970's superstars like Foreigner, Foghat and Bad Company. Free formed in London in 1968 when guitarist Paul Kossoff, then a member of the blues unit Black Cat Bones, was taken to see vocalist Paul Rodgers' group Brown Sugar by a friend, drummer Tom Mautner. After deciding...
