If I Was

If I Was, in my opinion, is one of the most powerful pop songs written of all time. Midge's voice cries out with such passion (ok maybe a bit of production help there) - it's such a great male vocal and one of the few that genuinely makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and send a shiver down my spine - over 20 years later.

Awesome

This is the finest piece of legendary Midge Ure's work. An outstanding vocalist, writer, arranger. The driving force behind the iconic Ultravox. The Gift is an awesome track which pulls deep into your soul as you listen to the lyrics and you apply your own meanings to it, Jesus, A child, this is the brilliance of it. Music is meant to touch your innercore not make money for producers. The Wastelands is a first rate song which even today fits the youth. Having just seen Ultravox live in Birmingham, my love for the group has been re-ignited yet again. Download this and enjoy pure brilliance and what real music is about.... Enjoy. Thanks for the Gift Midge.

It takes me back...

Back in the day (1985 to be exact) I was a massive Midge Ure and Ultravox fan and to some extent I still am. I have this albun on Vinyl and almost wore out the grooves of my copy at the time. Coming back to it 20 years later it plays as more of a plesant nostalgia trip than a vital album. There are certainly some great songs here, If i was, that certain smile and antillies. But some of what used to be mysterious and inventive inevitably comes accross as self indulgent twaddle; edo, the gift (reprise). Time fuelled arguments aside, In reality I have burnt a copy of this and its been in the car taking me way back when for the past week. One thing still puzzles, however. At the time my best mate thought that Wasteland was the best song ever written, it summed up for him everything he felt and thought he ever would feel at that point in time etc. But, for the life of me, no matter how many times i listen to the lyrics they are still a confused jumble of navel gazing pap. Sorry mate. Rock on midge!

One of the key members of the new wave band Ultravox, guitarist/vocalist Midge Ure began his professional music career with Salvation, a Glasgow-based group that became the bubblegum band Slik in 1974.
