iTunes Review
There was a moment in time, in the mid-‘00s, when New York MC Saigon was generating a tremendous buzz, dropping popular singles and mix-tapes, signing to Atlantic, working with super-producer Just Blaze, and appearing on the hit TV show Entourage. It seemed all but certain that he was all set to become hip-hop's "next big thing." Except then he wasn't. Due to the usual suspects — label drama, bad timing, the Internet, premature retirement, etc., the album never dropped, and seemed forever destined to live up to its title. Five years later, it's finally out. Blaze's production is outstanding as usual, front-loaded with layers of horns, strings, pianos, vocal snippets, and exceptional drums, while the Yardfather sounds off about the state of the hood, crime and punishment, and the ladies. Rock-solid from start to finish, with V.I.P. guests like Devin the Dude ("What the Lovers Do"), Jay-Z ("Come On Baby"), Q-Tip ("The Invitation"), and more.
Customer Reviews
Best hip hop album for years
Saigon excels himself with this. It really is every bit as good as the previous reviews say. It's not a who's who in hip hop producing (as many albums apear to be). It's simply Just Blaze doing what could possibly be his best work to date. As a result it does feel a little "old school" and you almost feel this album should have been released 15 years ago. But that's not to say it's a bad thing because it just feels so fresh. The way most of the tracks seamlessly blend into each other takes you by surprise and at times you don't realise you're listening to the next track. Saigons lyrics are clever and witty and almost seem effortless but after a few listens, it becomes apparent how much work he must have put into this project. On production value alone I would put this up there with doggystyle. I loved this album at first - and then I grew on me.
Greatest story FINALLY told!
Been waiting for this one for years its a banger! Saigons on fire
Well worth the wait!
What an album! This is what the fans have been waiting for and more. Saigon completely destroys every track. He joins the ranks of the great MCs with this album, which showcases his intelligence, versatility and devastating storytelling. A must-buy!
