Album Review

Over the years, trying to determine what is true "prog rock" and what is not has become an increasingly tricky proposition. In the early '70s, it was easy — any band that performed "suites" that extended across entire album sides and dressed in capes and/or cloaks was a dead giveaway. However, when the early '80s rolled around, most former prog rockers trimmed out the fat from their compositions (and exchanged their medieval wear and kimonos for what looked like sports coats). Ever since, there have been bands that have aligned themselves to either of the aforementioned prog rock approaches. But along came Porcupine Tree, who somehow have found a way to incorporate both into their 2009 effort, The Incident. Set up similarly to Rush's 1978 classic, Hemispheres, The Incident is comprised of a single long song — the title track — that features many different movements (which would have taken up the entire side one back in the good ol' days of vinyl), as well as a handful of shorter compositions that close the album. The aforementioned title track will certainly be the talk of the album, as it manages to incorporate bombast and melody (the sixth movement, which shares the album's title), rock ("Octane Twisted"), Yes' folky moments ("The Seance"), and Tool-like grooves ("Circle of Manias"), before it all gently floats away on a cloud of fairy dust ("I Drive the Hearse"). That said, unlike early proggers who favored meandering instrumental doodling over succinct songwriting, Porcupine Tree always favor the importance of memorable songs over flashy solos, which certainly makes the group one of the top modern-day prog rock bands.

TRULY EPIC

This album is an absolute masterpiece. It is the record PT have been threatening to write for some time now and does not disappoint on any level. It is much deeper, intimate and melodic than recent offerings and consequently is more accessable. The themed parts flow perfectly into each other whilst the stand alone songs are also equally good. There are some real shades of Pink Floyd here too, especially in Time Flies, which add to the broad musical canvas Steven Wilson has laid out for the listener. Without doubt, this is the best album I have heard in a number of years and were there any musical justice would see PT break out into wider awareness. Brilliant!!!

The best album of the year

Not much more to say, save that "I Drive the Hearse" is also possibly the most beautiful song of the year. Buy this album - you will not be disappointed.

Overhearing Lightbulb Sun one evening at a friends some years ago I just couldn't help being attracted to Porcupine Trees unmistakable fusion of throbbing hard rock riffs and soaring heart felt melodies. They're an instant hit with anyone like me, born and bred on rock bands from the 70's through to the mid 90's. Having now purchased everything they have ever recorded together I waited with eager anticipation for this album. Porcupine tree's musical influences are obvious and people will inevitably compare them to all the usual bands from the past. But for me they have slowly but surely carved out a little niche for themselves and their sound is now unmistakable. So how can I describe "The Incident" to you. Simple. Take the very best hard riffs, the most melodic tunes and the softest acoustic moments they've ever written, mix them all up together into a seamless concoction and you have this absolute masterpiece! There aren't many albums out there where you simply want to listen to it from start to finish without missing a note. Easily there best work by a country mile. No danger!

Though he initially came to wider attention (at least in the U.K.) with No-Man, his long-running collaboration with Tim Bowness, throughout the 1990s singer/guitarist Steven Wilson gained as much of a reputation for Porcupine Tree. Embracing and exploring prog rock inspirations while always keeping an ear out for newer musical connections, thus sidestepping the pointless revivalism of many of the band's...
