It's 1974 down here and the lamb lies down on broadway just for me

Of all the Peter Gabriel - rea Genesis albums, this one has always been a bit of a paradox for me. It has, without doubt, got more great songs on it than any other rock album I have ever heard. My first experience of Genesis playing live was the Lamb tour of 1975, I saw them perform the entire album twice at the Liverpool Empire, fond memories indeed. However I have to agree with the band's own conclusion that the album as an entity was somewhat flawed, overlong and with too many filler tracks. It seems the band were at breaking point as proved to be the case with Peter's imminent departure. But overall this is one of the must-hear albums of the pre-punk 70s and it broke new ground for this talented band in moving away from the middle-England prog-rock fairy tale reputation they had developed. The remaster, after just one listening, has revitalised the album. Well done indeed to Nick and the band. I will be buying the box set but as this is the only early era album currently available on iTunes it's a nice early bonus. Anyone curious about how Genesis evolved should listen and give it time, the reward will come for all. The title of the review is a lyric from Francis Dunnery's song Gulley Flats Boys, a song about his childhood in Cumbria. I'm proud to share his affection for this under-rated classic.

Ebbing Perfoming Perfectionism?

The 1970's did indeed see plenty of compositions that can only be regarded as weird and wonderful to the core. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is one such pinacle of this progressive regime that led the prog rock community along with other delights of its nature such as Tommy and The Wall. On one hand, you have a marvelous tale unravel itself to you in a mysteriously attractive musical coordination; such an experience that will remarkably entertain those with minds open to such a particular genre. On the other hand, you have an album that requires whole attention, lest some of its more tone-defying tracks spoil your list of independant songs on your shuffle icon. Yes, nobody purchases Speak to Me, or Stop; both of which from different Pink Floyd albums. If anybody did, then they would be soon either astonished by the minimalistic approach, entirely designed to patch up the fore-thought between melancholy chapters, or they would be highly enraged and make all attempts to declare war on Apple Inc.. Pay close attention to this album, not for its self-consciencous snobbery, but as a perfectly satisfactory full-length coalition of musical talent. Do that with any prog-rock scene giant, and you too, may be drawn into the golden realm of bizzare alternatism.

Mr

I have loved this album since day one and listen to it more now than ever before, it just flows perfectly, I don't see tracks as fillers just a chance to get your breath back

Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett.
