Album Review

When DevilDriver first started out, some assumed the band was merely a side project for everyone's favorite facially tattooed frontman, Coal Chamber's Dez Fafara. But by the group's third release, 2007's The Last Kind Words, it appeared as though Fafara has completely put the nu-metal shtick of his former band behind him — the group is a 100 percent metallic beast that has more in common with thrash/extreme metal than all those unbearable "eyeliner metal bands." The group is just as heavy and brutal as the average band you'd spot while scanning Headbanger's Ball, as evidenced by such toe-tapping ditties as "Not All Who Wander Are Lost" and "Bound by the Moon." But therein lies the problem (the same exact dilemma that befalls many a modern metal band of the early 21st century) — there's not anything all that much different going on here when compared to all the other acts from the current metal crop. Nothing fancy — just an extreme metal roar that hits you right between the eyes, which may have been DevilDriver's goal all along.

DevilDriver OMFG! XD

Holy Shiit, this album is freaking immense. Dez Fafara's scream is so powerful it's almost insane and the guitar work is also really good. If you just want to download a few songs from the album because you're low on cash (or just plain poor, like me), then I would reccommend "Clouds Over California" and "Bound By The Moon." Seriously, insane songs...... Buy it!!!

One of the best metal albums of 2007

Firstly, do not read the Apple review of this album. Its says it sounds like most other bands of this genre. The only album I can think of to compare it with is Lamb of God's 'Sacrament' album, but only this latest opus from Devildriver is far heavier and in my opinion, better. Every song on this album is relentless, the pummelling of the drums is some of the best and fastest I have ever heard, the guitars, while not technical as say, the mighty Megadeth, provide some exceptional riffs and solos. The growls from frontman Dez Fafara are superb, a long way from his Coal Chamber days - in fact they are some of the best in metal today. Best songs? Take your pick really, they are all good, but my favourites are the classic 'Clouds over California', Horn of Betrayal' the anthemic soldier-influenced 'These Fighting Words' and the exceptional 'The Axe Shall Fall' - which contains the best outro to any album since Fear Factory's 'Demanufacture'. 2007 was a good year for metal, with some brilliant albums by Megadeth, Down and Machine Head to name but a few, but Devildriver can be proud in the fact they have made one of the best albums of 2007 and probably of this century. Essential purchase.

Great 3rd album from DevilDriver

Every time DevilDriver release an album, it's a street ahead of the one before. 'The Last Kind Words' is the best of their albums to date, but you just know that when 'Pray For Villains' is released, it's going to make mincemeat of this one. Especially if the two teaser tracks that are already out there are anything to go by. After that incredible set at Download, you can tell they've stepped up to the big league. 2009 looks like it's going to be DevilDriver's year.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Following the dissolution of Marilyn Manson/Korn-aping, nu-metal also-rans Coal Chamber, vocalist Dez Fafara hooked up with guitarists Evans Pitts and Jeffrey Kendrick, bassist Jon Miller, and drummer John Boecklin to form DevilDriver — a rather more extreme band dedicated to the subsequent hardcore-meets-death metal trends. Signed to Roadrunner like Fafara's previous group, DevilDriver released their eponymous debut to mixed reviews in 2003, and then its even less appreciated follow-up, The...
