Awesome

I can't praise this enough, the lads have come up with a total gem here - stand out tracks for me are Africa, That Close, Norton Folgate and from the double disc version of the album, Mission From Hell, Seven Dials and The Kiss. This is not an album of pure ska like thier early works, rather it is a progression along the path laid down with the Rise and Fall - the word that best describes this album for me is 'craftsmanship' - it is a virtuoso work by artists at the very top of thier game - buy it and enjoy.

The latest and greatest amazing arrival

Madness have finally produced the album I always knew they were capable of. If this proved to be the swansong of the group it could be considered a befitting epitaph to one of the country's best loved, but sadly underrated, groups of recent years. From the opening bars of the overture through We are London and into On the Town the album takes you on an almost concept album course. Culminating in a rousing opus in the title track which would have to be given the full Lionel Bart treatment if a video were produced although having said that if you listen to the album in the dark you can almost imagine a small cinematic masterpiece for each track. With songs dealing with the lives of people in several stages of thier existance and the potted history of the capital itself we are again treated to some excellent songwriting from the seven members of Madness. At times touching and at others stirring there can be no doubt that this boxset is my favourite Madness album and a return to form well overdue... now for a Brit award?

Madness's most complete album

There's no doubt that Madness are a great singles band. They're not bad live, either, having been know to cause the occasional earthquake. But for years the one criticism they faced was that their albums weren't up to scratch. Well, no longer!

In my opinion, The Liberty of Norton Folgate is the most *complete* album Madness have ever released. It starts strongly and ends even stronger (with the epic title track), never seeming to lack substance. NW5 is the closest we get to a commercial hit, but the overall maturity of the release proves that you can be grown up and a little bit nutty at the same time - which I'm sure comes as a relief to the majority of their fans!

Along with the Specials, Madness were one of the leading bands of the ska revival of the late '70s and early '80s. As their career progressed, Madness branched away from their trademark "nutty sound" and incorporated large elements of Motown, soul, and British pop. Although the band managed one crossover American hit in 1983, the band remained a British phenomenon, influencing...
