Folk Album Of The Year?

"Threads" was a very assured debut album from Ruth Notman, and if you enjoyed that you will absolutely adore this. Notman's superb, and very distinctive, voice is the strength that underpins everything here. It has the maturity needed for the deeply emotional songs, but she can change in an instant to deliver the humerous and light hearted in a way that leaves you feeling ridiculously happy. My personal favourite on this album is "The Squire of Tamworth": this is a song that was "recovered" from obscurity by the great John Tams & prior to this the only time I'd heard it was when John played it live: so it was a delight to find it on this album. Other highlights are Tams "Hold Back the Tide" and her take on "The Cruel Sister". "Si Tu Dois Partir" & "Johnny Be Fair" simply leave you feeling unaccountably happy. This is an album that has balance throughout, combining as it does her own take on traditional songs, and her own compositions, which show that she is a song writer of real talent. "The Life of Lilly" & " Holding On" being especially good. The other strength of this album is the musicians she has enlisted to support her, whose playing is superb throughout. There are a siginifcant number of high quality folk albums around this year in what is an extremely vibrant British folk scene. Despite the competition, I think this album will be in the running for folk album of the year. Ruth Notman is here to stay and will be a major talent for many years to come.

Talent will out

I bought and loved Threads, saw Ruth live, enjoyed the music and thought it would be over in a year, after all se is only a kid.
Wrong! This is better. A range of songs, styles and moods all wonderfully portrayed.
Lark in the clear air and Waters of Tyne are particular favorites, but I never skip this when I play it, and that is rare praise indeed.

:)

This is my a really great album, my favourite songs are 'Si Tu Dois Partir' and 'Johnny Be Good'. Personally, I think that one or two of the songs are slightly depressing, but all the others make you feel really happy.
