Album Review

The Mission Bell is one of the most affirmative works of arena rock ever to punctuate the CCM landscape. The unabashed declarations of belief on fist-pumping anthems like "Here I Am Send Me" and "Paint the Town Red" are set to pulsing rhythms. Comparisons to U2 are inevitable, not just for Martin Smith's Bono-esque vocals but for the band's sonic leanings. "All This Time" sounds like an outtake from The Unforgettable Fire, while "Take Off My Shoes" fits comfortably alongside any track from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Stu Garrard's ethereal guitar work blends harmoniously with keyboard overtones one minute, then rocks full-throttle the next. The quintet's star power drew a host of guest musicians, including Tobymac, Matt Redman, Steve Mason, Faye Simpson, and Moya Brennan. Christianity Today named it one of the Top Ten CCM albums of 2005.

Excellent new album from Delirious?

The long running Christian group Delirious? seem to be fairly consistent in producing music that is in the highest tier of contemporary Christian rock and worship. Though admittedly they are not to everyone's taste, few find much to dislike about greater past hits such as 'I could sing of your love forever' and 'My Glorious'. The new album 'The Mission Bell' is perhaps their best yet. Tunes such as 'Stronger' have that classic Delirious? feel to them, but what is perhaps the greatest element to this album is the sheer range of musical styles that they get up to. The hard-rocking 'Paint the Town Red' could hardly be more different from the sombre 'Miracle Maker', or the surprisingly funky 'Solid Rock'. Lyrical style is also stepped up in this album; combined with the solid, worshipful lyrics you would normally expect from the band, this album also touches fairly serious issues such as abortion in 'Our God Reigns'. All in all.. long may Delirious?'s efforts continue - this album is another great evolution in the band's sound. Finally, you ought to be aware that, as this is a Christian band, it holds God and other Christian ideas central in the music - this might well put some off. On the other hand, this might just be what you're after - a fresh new noise from some of the longest running worship groups out there.

Hmm...

I think fans of the older Delirous are forever changing places with new people, who like the newer Delirious sound. Musically, I think their peak was Mezzamorphis - certainly it was the only album they've done which could sit comfortably with the quality of the mainstream music scene they were hoping to 'break into' at the time. 'Q' magazine in the UK gave a very good review. From a worship point of view, their most impressive album is Live and in the Can. The thing that has put me off their music recently is the way they have tried to combine mainstream sounds with worship material - a dilema a lot of Christian bands face. The 'Glo' album was the best attempt at doing this. I'm afraid this album is just too complicated (in an uncontrolled way) for meaningful worship. In my opinion the songwriting is not strong enough to listen to it for non-worship reasons. I know Delirious have lots of fans still, but I think that is indicative of a poor quality of Christian bands rather than their music being particularly good.

Men on a mission

Perhaps its just me, but it seems that delirious are trying to reconnect with their roots. As hopes of crossover success fade they seem to have found a new freedom to be able to make records that are unashamedly bold in professing their faith. Perhaps the most powerful songs are the ones where they allow themselves to be still. Standout tracks include Fires Burn (- a beautiful ballad that allows itself the time to wear its heart on its sleeve), Our God Reigns, Miarcle Maker and Take Off My Shoes. All the more poigniant is the fact that this was one of the last records that the legendary Chris Blair mastered. This is the delirious with something to say.
