Album Review

The Most Incredible Thing is the Pet Shop Boys' first foray into the world of ballet scoring, and it’s as slick and smart as expected. Composed for London’s Sadlers Wells Theater adaptation of a late-period Hans Christian Andersen story, this must be a welcome souvenir for audience members, but those not in attendance will find the two-disc set a bit much, and with so many story-driven twists and audio cues, it’s too demanding for background listening. That said, any fans who found the duo’s Battleship Potemkin soundtrack compelling will find this a welcome, lighter alternative, seeing as how the sound is another mashing of Russian classical music and synth pop, with Tchaikovsky being the composer of influence here. Light melodies meet sweeping orchestral movements, and the ticking of clocks and other sound effects play a big role — plus you never know when a drum machine or sequencer will jump in, turning any given Swan Lake inspiration into a disco during prime time. Of limited appeal, but appealing nonetheless.

a new body of work

some of the reviewers seem to have missed the point of this album - it's the soundtrack to a new ballet which is being performed at Sadlers Wells in March and as such is not intended to be a "normal" pop album by any standards. I have been a petshopboys fan for over 20 years, and approached this album with some trepidation, but given the basis of it I find it refreshing and many layered. A new take on an old Hans Christian Anderson tale, the score is multifaceted and takes you the listener on a real journey which is at times surprising and yet familiar.

I can't wait to see it "live" and understand the passion behind the music in a visual form.

It's a not a commercial PSB album

As per alot of others have pointed out this is the score to a show. The person who spelt Neil incorrectly is obviously too silly to realise that as are the others. Not main stream album.

Not much of a singalong!

First and foremost, It's a ballet score - not a pop album - 21 tracks of instrumentals. Not such much of a peep out of Mr Tennant. I'd like the Boys to interpret this album in one of their 'Disco-esque' styles, add lyrics and make at least half of these music tracks pop songs. Probably just one for contemporary ballet fans or die hard PSB followers.
