Customer Reviews

Covered with style

The fact that Tunng manage to bring something new to an already brilliant song, showcases their talent for ingenuity and intelligence. They turn 'The Pioneers' in to an altogether quieter beast, creating a pensive and somewhat haunting song. They also infuse their own penchant for folk rhythms to great effect, the result - an original, heartfelt rendition that equals Bloc Party's mastery.

All About Context

This is Tunng's version of The Pioneers and Was Commissioned by Bloc Party/Wichita to appear as a b-side to the original The Pioneers single (albeit exclusively to iTunes at the time). It is not some desperate cover by a band gagging for popularlity, it is not a random swipe at another band's material. Tunng are an excellent and respected band in their own right and this is a lovely if not remarkable reworking of a fine tune. While this is by far not Tunng's best work the band rarely drop the ball and Tunng fans will appreciate their lilting, acousitc rendition. Less receptive Bloc Party fans, obviously, may be a little nonplussed. Those new to Tunng would be better placed to download Tale From Black for a true slice of Tunng brilliance.

This Is...Tunng

Stop being so precious about a song that, let's face it, was not the greatest moment on Silent Alarm. Surely a good song is a good song and, short of having the crazy frog "ning ning ning"ing over the top of it, is therefore pretty hard to trash? The fact that Tunng have covered a Bloc Party song and made it sound very much like a Tunng song is credit to their unique talents. And I'm pretty sure Kele et al would rather have it sound like this than just another bunch of chancers who heard one Gang Of Four record a couple of times and picked up a guitar.....Oh, plus: Tale From Black is great, too. Though it has been available on the album for a while.

Biography

Formed: London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Though the core members of Tunng, Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay, began their musical partnership composing scores for softcore porn, they soon decided to form a band that would bring together Genders' gentle vocals with Lindsay's guitar playing and songwriting. To fill out their sound, the duo added more guitars as well as female vocals, turntables, programming, and other percussion. Often labeled as either "future folk" or "folktronica" by critics who had a hard time placing the band's sound, Tunng...
