Customer Reviews

A bit of balance...

It's a shame so many "reviews" on iTunes take the shape of "It's brilliant" or "It's dreadful" without taking any kind of objective stance. Both PG and LR have earned their reputations as leading luminaries of rock music over the past 40-odd years. Their acclaim has been reached through not pandering to what the masses expects. You never quite know what you're going to get with either of them. These tracks, their own unique interpretations of each other's works serve to confirm this. So quite why everyone should be expecting a faithful cover of 'Solsbury Hill' is a mystery. Sure, Lou is an acquired taste - he always has been. But if you clearly don't 'get' him, which seems to be the case with my fellow reviewers, then why bother even making a comment? You don't have to like it, but at least be constructive in your criticisms.

For the record, Lou Reed's take on 'Solsbury Hill' is typical of so much of his canon. A mix of alternative rock, the avant-garde and punk sensibilities, it lends a new mood to PG's original and is perhaps comparable to some of Gabriel's more offbeat moments. The dirty, fizzing guitar compliments Lou's trademark deadpan vocal delivery while the toning down of the original melody captures the mood of the lyric - while optimistic at its climax, it is mainly a reflection of disillusionment and frustration.

Nothing is sacred in rock & roll and it never has been. 'Solsbury hill' was a great record in 1977, it still is today. But it's not untouchable and like all great music, should always be open to interpretation.

Pure Quality from Gabriel!!

I don't know why everyone is bleating on about Lou Reed's cover version. Instead, they should be rating Peter Gabriel's awesome and spine tingling version of Power Of The Heart. Try listening to this with headphones on and turn it up - it really is pure quality!!

Dreadful!

That is an absolutely dreadful interpretation of Solsbury Hill! Why oh why did they bother releasing it? The Power of the Heart is a decent cover though.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
