Album Review

Composer David Julyan's murky score for director Christopher Nolan's equally atmospheric dueling magicians tale The Prestige is a hypnotic assault of tension and little release. The Memento and Insomnia composer builds what initially sounds like an orchestra tuning into a brooding, minimalist wave of a score that channels the Victorian dread of the film. Elliptical swelling strings, ghostly piano, and dissonant walls of brass ebb and flow throughout, making The Prestige a vaguely unsettling experience without the benefit of celluloid.

Typical, but still technical...

Similar to every other Julyan album this music is undoubtably fantastic when enjoyed as a backing to the main film, but not necessarily as succesful as a stand alone sound track. Although the music in every respect is perfectly complementary to the film as in INSOMNIA, THE DESCENT, and MEMENTO, the music is so perfectly tuned to the on screen action that it requires a vivid imagination or photographic memory of the film in question to be really enjoyable as a stand alone experience. The advice before buying, therefore, is this: listen first, watch the film, and if sountracks are your thing then, on a technical and musical level, this will not disappoint. Just don't buy this expecting it, alone, to be as enjoyable as the movie itself because, as with most things, without one the other is only half as good.

You want to be........ fooled!

This is one of my favourite albums, the music is perfectly ambient and seldom draws attention to itself, making it a perfect mood score and a great album to listen to whilst reading (ghost stories optional). The manner in which the music works is not unlike the magicians in the film, you're manipulated subtlely without being really aware of it.

It's the sort of soundtrack that does not usually get it's due, but the film would not have been half as atmospheric without it.
