iTunes Review

Named after the greatest unreleased Bruce Springsteen song, The Promise is the collection of outtakes from the Darkness On the Edge of Town session that are also included in the expanded edition of The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge of Town Story. These 21 tracks (really 22, since “City of Night” also includes a hidden track called “The Way”) are stunning in their quality: both the integrity of the compositions and the power of the sound.  Some of these tracks have been circulating on bootlegs for years, but they’ve never sounded like this. “Racing In the Street (’78)” features a “’32 Ford” and a vocal that is one of Bruce’s finest. “Outside Looking In,” “Someday (We’ll Be Together)” and “One Way Street” evoke the history of rock ‘n’ roll with echoes of ‘50s and ‘60s pop. “Because the Night”, a hit for Patti Smith, is here as Springsteen originally wrote it. “Fire”, a hit for the Pointer Sisters, is given the E Street Band treatment. And “The Promise” has never sounded more complete, a heartbreaking tale of broken friendship and betrayal.

Ok but...

there's a reason 'previously unreleased tracks' are 'previously unreleased'.

Springsteen is god!

Darkness on the edge of town is a classic. Yet he managed to leave a further 21 beautiful songs off the album. The Promise is possibly the greatest album never released that has now thankfully been released!

Superb

I had to go out and buy the CD - I like owninbg the phyical record for Boss releases! Worth every penny. There is not a good enough superlative for this. Studio versions of a couple of later live tracks, early versions of tracks later released and so much more. It could have been recorded this year not thirty years ago. Anything else like this in the vaults???

In the decades following his emergence on the national scene in 1975, Bruce Springsteen proved to be that rarity among popular musicians, an artist who maintained his status as a frontline recording and performing star, consistently selling millions of albums and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world year after year, as well as retaining widespread critical approbation, with ecstatic reviews greeting those discs and shows. Although there were a few speed bumps along the way in Springsteen's...
