Kershaw’s Magnum Opus?
How would you react if a wild-eyed, lunatic fan approached you in the street or supermarket, quoting lyrics from an album you made over 20 years ago… claiming that it was the ‘best thing ever’ and it ‘changed their life’? I’ve not met him… I’ve not even seen him play live… but if I ever spotted Mr. Kershaw shopping for groceries, I would most certainly be that lunatic fan. I wouldn’t be able to help myself. You see, ‘The Riddle’ is simply amazing. A beautiful and engaging slice of pop perfection. A sublime blend of the (then) cutting-edge tech and superb musical talent. From the rhythmical, brass-stabbing opener in ‘Don Quixote’ to the sad, slow heartbeat of ‘Save the Whale’, this album delivers a tale of incipient madness and potential dystopia… cleverly at odds and congruent to the trends of the era. OK… so ‘best thing ever’ and ‘changed my life’ would probably sound ridiculous spoken out loud in the middle of the crisps aisle but the album’s effects on me back then, as a youngster, still pervade today. Nice one Nik.
Nik's best by far
A politically motivated album if ever there was one, from Know How (police state ?), You Might (Ego), Wild Horses (Stress) and Roses (waste disposal) Not a bad track on the album and in my opinion still ranks as his best. Still relevant over 20 years after its release.
Nik Kershaw is the best!
The first album I ever owned was a tape of Human Racing that my anuty gave to me when I was 5. Later I bought the CD and also found a best of CD with other great tracks on. I got his later stuff which is great too but in a different style. I was so excited to find Nik's back catalogue on iTunes as I'd never have heard these songs any other way. I've only had chance to listen to this once through but I love it already!
