iTunes Review
The Rip Tide, Zach Condon’s fourth release as Beirut, isn’t the full-immersion experience into another time and place that his first three were — exploring the Balkan and Roma traditions on Gulag Orkestar, roaming the French countryside on The Flying Cup Club, or tromping with a Mexican funeral band across the front half of the March of the Zapotec/Holland EP. But the locales he visits on this release are still fascinating. It’s like discovering an intriguing town close to home that you never knew existed. “Santa Fe” uses a simple, catchy synth groove for a light techno pop feel, “East Harlem” rides punchy horns and percussive piano to its finish, and “A Candle’s Fire” and “Goshen” are textured, well-crafted songs with memorable melodies. The title track and “Vagabond” are the most cinematic and richly orchestrated numbers, featuring layers of harmony vocals and sweeping instrumental flourishes. Less theatrical and quirky than previous releases, The Rip Tide’s relative restraint places the inventive arrangements and Condon’s warm croon front and center.
Customer Reviews
Pure brilliance.
Different to their other albums and EPs but still just as brilliant. This album is very upbeat but keeping the quality Beirut sound which we love to listen to! I really enjoy listening to this album and in my opinion it is money well spent, I probably would have bought it at a higher price because Mr Zach Condon and co have done very well on this and deserve the money! Hopefully many others agree with me.
BUY IT!
Quality control working again
A return to form & the gulag orchestra, who were sadly lacking on the last album, giving us the sound that adds so much charm to thier albums.I thought the last album was very wide of the mark & just a mess, but if you liked "Gulag Orkastrar" & The Flying Club Cup" then this is pretty much a must.Very very good, my faith has been restored.
Fantastic aural experience!
I've been a fan for a number of years of this gutsy polished act. Listened to the album into and out of London this afternoon which gave me a great smile . Fantastic follow up to their last album - can't wait to crank it up on the stereo.
