Album Review

Opening with a swirling psychedelic sound, the title track of The State of Things by Reverend & the Makers moves quickly into an indie rock track complete with 1990s Madchester style bassline, danceable drum beat, and jangly guitars. Led by Jon McClure whose former band Judan Suki featured among many others, Alex Turner and Matt Helders who later went on to form the Arctic Monkeys, who Reverend & the Makers supported on their tour in 2006. Turner, in kind, adds backing vocals and guitar on the track "Sex with the Ex." McClure goes through most of the rest of the album attempting to be witty and controversial with his observant lyrics and social commentary on modern urban life. It has all been said before and by poets with far more cynicism and realism in their voices than the good Reverend. The State of Things includes the hit singles "Heavyweight Champion of the World" and "He Said He Loved Me" about a young girl's experience with a date who wasn't particularly honest, featuring counter vocals by Laura Manuel on the chorus sounding like a Lily Allen/Kate Nash typical teenage girl. A confident debut album but with far too many filler tracks to make any sort of lasting impression.

Pure Beauty

And those 5 stars are based on the first 4 tracks alone (Im trying not to listen to it all untill i get my copy) dont listen to the 5/10 NME review, the bloke was goin on about Alex Turner more than the album tracks. Buy this album you wont regret it, thats a promise from me.

Awesome!

Like someone else said...don't believe the NME review...this album is one of thr freshest collection of songs I have heard for a long long time....great baselines, great lyrics and very topical. The singles stand out (HCOTW especially...even after several hundred listens) but every song is a gem. Best album I've heard this year. Buy it!

Outstanting!

The NME's damming review of the album is completly unjustified. This is possibly one of the best albums of the year, with incrieable lyrics and beats, what more could you want from an album. Bandits and The State of Things are by far the best songs on the album, well worth the money.

Fusing indie rock melodies and attitudes with dance rhythms and electronic surfaces, Reverend and the Makers were formed by vocalist and songwriter Jon McClure, who at the age of 25 was already a fixture on the music scene in Sheffield, England. Previously a member of the short-lived bands Judan Suki and 1984, McClure had a reputation in Sheffield as both a songwriter and a poet, and became something of a mentor to Alex Turner, who would become an overnight sensation as the leader of the group Arctic...
