iTunes Review

One of those obvious ideas that not everyone could’ve pulled off, the Pogues’ meld of Irish traditional music and spitting punk-rock energy led to some of the most striking and startling music of its era. This 21-track collection pulls classics from albums such as Rum, Sodomy and the Lash and If I Should Fall From Grace With God for a jukebox-ready crash course. Alongside tales of drunkenness (“Streams of Whiskey”), the aftermath of war (“The Band Played Waltzing Matilda”), dead-end living (“Dirty Old Town”) and more drunkenness (“A Rainy Night in Soho”) sit jubilant hops like “London Girl” and the bittersweet seasonal favorite “Fairytale of New York” with singer Kirsty MacColl. The Pogues’ attitude, smarts and sound continue to echo through the likes of the Dropkick Murphys, but their Very Best makes clear that the original is hard to beat.

Outstanding

this is a great album containing all you would expect from the pogues, with their unique music style. if you like things a bit different and don't have any pogues in your collection this is a must, and will liven up any party!

amazing

this is the 2nd best pogues album there is, the 1st is the ultimate collection but this is still great. best track is the irish rover

GENIUS...

Yeah alright, so is the black (albeit dark red) stuff. But don't let the 'drinking songs' tag destract you from the beauty of the Pogues' music and, lets be honest, the true genius of the songs. Flick through all of these tracks and I bet you just have to download one! My personal fave is 'A Pair of Brown Eyes', just for the record.

By demonstrating that the spirit of punk could live in traditional Irish folk music, the Pogues were one of the most radical bands of the mid-'80s. Led by Shane MacGowan, whose slurred, incomprehensible voice often disguised the sheer poetry of his songs, the Pogues were undeniably political — not only were many of their songs explicitly in favor of working-class liberalism, but the wild, careening sound of their punk-injected folk was implicitly radical. While the band was clearly radical,...
