Album Review
What can one make of the Wildhearts? Their self-titled album's opening track, "Rooting for the Bad Guy," featured nearly nine minutes of thrash rock, as hard as anything Slipknot had ever done, but a melodic chorus and a guitar break in the middle were taken from the Slash book of how to play lead guitar. Ginger's throat surely must have been painful after screaming this set of songs, but that was his trademark: madness and mayhem. Every track sparkled with energy, "The Revolution Will Be Televised" sounding not unlike the Clash's "I Fought the Law," but a heavy guitar riff running through it marked this as a Wildhearts classic, and "Slaughtered Authors" was another eight-minute epic, giving the song time to build through several different themes, while the final track, "Destroy All Monsters," had a Metallica-style riff and three false endings before it finally came to a crashing halt. The Wildhearts marked the reunion of guitarist CJ (Chris Jaghdar) and drummer Ritch Battersby for the first time since the mid-'90s, and this was also the first album on which the band was joined by American bass player Scott Sorry, formerly of the U.S. punk band Amen and rockers Brides of Destruction. Not an album to appeal to the mainstream, but the fans who had stuck with the band since the early '90s would find plenty to excite them.
Customer Reviews
2007 will be hard pushed to produce a better album than this!
In an attempt NOT to follow the hype, I've examined this album with a highly pretentious and critical ear, pinning down the weaker points in the tracks and disecting the song structures with a fine toothcomb so as not to be swept up....... then I hit a chorus!! Oh sod it! This band ROCKS! Buy it! It really is that simple! The Wildhearts are the best band of our era! The hype is all true! Ginger's honest, world-weary lyrics rival Dylan's best works while the band's instrumental melodies, vocal harmonies and sheer musical discipline remain completely unrivalled. The album swings from an angellic chorus of heartfelt vocals and bright chords into a violent, schitzophrenic monster attack of raw tour-de-force riff-rock! There's no gimicks, no unnecessary glitz. Rock cliches litterally have the p*ss beaten out of them in an album that reflects the entire emotional content of a country, arguably in financial and emotional chaos! It would be tragic, but no surprise if this album is ignored my the muic industry... it would be fitting if this band finally recieve the credit they deserve. 2007 will be hard pushed to produce a better album than this! Their finest album since Earth Versus..... possibly finer! Dark. Delicate. Epic. Sublime!
riff masters
ive been a wildhearts fan for the longest time and i have to say that this is on a par with earth vs. this is by far some of their best material, the wildhearts have never been shy of experimenting with their music but i feel this is what they're best at. the masters of riffs are back with a bang. a big hats off guys, this album was well worth the wait. im only hoping it gets the recognition it deserves. how about a slot on 'later with jools holland'?
Another Masterpiece from the best british band since the clash
This is another masterpiece from Ginger & the gang. When are people going to wake up and realise the Wildhearts are the best british band since the Clash, Ginger hasto be one of the finest song writers this country has produced since John Lennon. Every song so catchy yet laden with monster riffs the man is a fucking genius. this album stands up there with Earth vs the Wildhearts, Cant wait to see them next week.
