Album Review

It shouldn't surprise any Ellie Goulding fan to know that as a songwriter, the 23-year-old British songstress has written for the likes of Gabriella Cilmi and Diana Vickers. That's because Goulding's talent doesn't stretch far from other teen Brit-pop artists of 2010, who are more likely to pull back and dig deep on a record than indulge in the froth of Girls Aloud or Sugababes. However, Goulding's first full-length album, Lights, seems to fall somewhere in between the two. Ultimately, Goulding's album is something of relevance; it lacks the dramatic crash and bang of Florence and the Machine's Lungs, but is certainly a more restrained, compelling listen than the debut records by Pixie Lott and Little Boots. Goulding's quite the songwriter (she co-wrote every track), and records like "This Love" and "Under the Sheets" suggest that Goulding's album doesn't fall back on singles like Paloma Faith's album Do You Want The Truth or Something Beautiful? This album is tender, sharp, and most importantly, musically relevant. Goulding is able to take the best parts of all of her contemporaries' styles and create pleasantly surprising records. A casual listener may not adore Goulding's album in its entirety, but no one will be able to find something he or she can't adore from this young magical talent. ~ Matthew Chisling, Rovi

Have waiting for this album for sooo long. The final versions of the songs are very different to the demos I've heard, and a lot of the lyrics have changed too. To be honest I think i prefer some of the earlier versions more but maybe I just need to get used to the new ones. she should've kept a couple of songs acoustic, it just sounds a bit too polished and synth-y for someone who's meant to be FOLKtronica... Apart from that, great debut album, love love love her voice (which is even better live) and really hope the album does well.

Highly anticipated, highly recommended!

Ellie Goulding’s unique blend of melancholic acoustics and modern pop have produced an incredibly rich, stunning sound; aptly captured and elegantly exhibited here in her debut album. For those of you who appreciate adventurous pop music, this is a must buy!

Just finished my first play through of this album, and it is fantastic. Such a refreshing change from the vast majority of current music. The only thing that could make it better would be the inclusion of the Jakwob remix of Starry Eyed which is fantastic and I would recommend listening to. For those who don't want to buy the whole album I would recommend "The Writer" as it is simply amazing and we've all heard Starry Eyed and Under the Sheets before.
