Album Review
The album that first gave shape to the established Yes sound, built around science-fiction concepts, folk melodies, and soaring organ, guitar, and vocal showpieces. "Your Move" actually made the U.S. charts as a single, and "Starship Trooper," "Perpetual Change," and "Yours Is No Disgrace" became much-loved parts of the band's concert repertory for many tours to come. It was remastered in 1995, with significantly improved sound. Then, in January 2003, Rhino reissued The Yes Album in a newly remastered and expanded edition, with a much brighter, crisper and fuller sound, new annotation by Yes scholar Bill Martin, and three bonus tracks: The single edits of "Your Move" and the "Life Seeker" portion of "Starship Trooper", and the studio version of the Steve Howe acoustic guitar solo number "Clap". All of the music, down to the tiniest nuances of Howe's guitar work or Chris Squire's bass playing, is exposed as never before, and the vocals have greater warmth. The studio version of "Clap" is less focused and succinct than the slightly shorter live rendition from the original LP, and it contains about a minute of material that Howe removed from the piece and later explored more effectively in "Mood For A Day" off of the group's next album, so we're essentially getting a preview-after-the-fact of part of Fragile.

THE PURPLE PERIOD BEGINS
The Yes Album marked the transition of Yes from a promising new act producing a mixture of unusual covers and their own songs, to a fully-fledged tightly-honed prog rock combo producing intricate melodic rock music featuring dazzling instrumentalists and the pure voice of Jon Anderson. I first saw the band at Kingston Poly in March 1971 playing mainly songs from this album - they were amazing. I've followed them ever since but Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper and Perpetual Change still thrill whenever I hear the original studio versions or any of many live versions that they have released over the years. This was the begining of what I regard as their 'purple period', the 6+ years that produced their greatest albums (The Yes Album through to Going for the One), and I include in that Topographic Oceans which I regard as one of their greatest. Yes are a phenomenon without parallel in rock music, and this album marked the beginning of their reign as kings of prog rock.
Timeless and Wonderful
As a boy of 17 I was blown away by the lyricism and underlying complexity of the tunes on this album, and it answered a need for more depth than could possibly be provided by so-called 'popular' music. Steve Howe is entirely responsible for piquing my interest in the guitar, and was kind enough to answer my over-enthusiastic letters way back then. I was foolish enough to part company with my vinyl copy some time ago but now, 30 years later, I have downloaded the album and am every bit as impacted by it as I was then and I am excited about re-discovering what Yes meant to me all that time ago. Their music has a lasting quality that transcends style and it can be deeply satisfying. In the intervening years I have developed a solid interest in classical and jazz music, and I am perhaps better placed now to appreciate the professionalism and skill that Yes brought to their music; and I am still playing the guitar - thanks Steve! The Yes Album is a timeless and wonderful example of their craft, and it would do many a would-be song-writer good to pause and learn from them.
Prog pop?
This is the easy listening, pop end of the prog rock genre, and that is not critical in any way. This is a fantastic album, 'Yours is no disgrace' is brilliant, the whole album is one to put on, cheer you up, get your foot tapping. Yes are at their best here as they avoid the bombastic, too serious side of prog where musicianship ruled over songwriting. Anyone who likes the 90125 pop rock music will certainly like this.
