iTunes Review

30 Seconds to Mars plunges into apocalyptic terrain on their third release, This Is War. The trio goes for a widescreen, blood-and-thunder sound with the production help of studio legends Steve Lillywhite and Flood. The star of this post-grunge/industrial/prog-rock hybrid is Jared Leto, who holds forth with messianic fervor amidst waves of synthesizer and volleys of guitar. Leto and his bandmates revel in spiritual extremes — songs like “Hurricane”, “Kings and Queens” and the title track depict ceaseless battles between the forces of light and darkness. At times, the dark side seems triumphant, as in the sinister “Stranger In a Strange Land” and the horrific “Night of the Hunter”. Contrasting with such demonic effusions are the bleakly romantic “100 Suns” and the dreamy-to-desperate “Alibi,” tunes that cast Leto in a more vulnerable light. The bone-shaking drums and wailing choir fueling “Vox Populi” are typical of the bold sonic gestures heard throughout the album. 30 Seconds to Mars’ muscle and ferocity is captured to full effect in these tracks.

This Is War

30 Seconds To Mars have finally returned with the album of the year. It had been four long years since A Beautiful Lie was released, which was an incredible piece of music. With every new album a band release, everyone is always questioning will it be better than their last album or will it be a complete disappointment? I had no questions like that with 30STM, every album they have produced have been brilliant.

When 30STM first appeared on the music scene, thay were automatically branded the 'actors band'. Their debut album did show their potential, with great classic tracks like Year Zero, Oblivion, Capricorn (A Brand New Name) and my personal favourite, 93 Million Miles. But it wasn't until their breakthrough smash, A Beautiful Lie was released in 2005, that 30STM became true rock stars. It was Attack that first got me interested, as soon as i heard the song, i wanted it. So i downloaded the album and it blew me away, every song was incredible. Attack, From Yesterday, The Kill, Battle Of One, A Beautiful Lie and R-Evolve all had turns on the top of mu most played list.

Now This Is War has been released and they have proved that they are now a well established rock band. I pre-ordered this album as soon as it came available and it arrived on the weekend. Similar to their last album, the sound of the album is grand, heavy and epic, but lyrically has become alot darker. In Stranger In A Strange Land, the opening lyrics to the song are, "Enemy of mine, I'll f**k you like the devil, violent inside", and in the bridge of Night Of The Hunter, "Honest To God, i will break your heart, tear you to pieces and rip you apart". It is a brilliant album, the more upbeat/heavier tracks on the album come from Night Of The Hunter, Kings and Queens, Close To The Edge and Search and Destroy. And the more softer tracks are 100 Suns, Hurricane an Alibi. My song ratings are:

Escape - 7/10
Night Of The Hunter - 10/10
Kings and Queens - 10/10
This is War - 9/10
100 Suns - 8/10
Hurricane - 10/10
Closer To The Edge - 9/10
Vox Populi - 9/10
Search and Destroy - 9/10
Alibi - 8/10
Stranger In a Strange Land - 10/10
L490 - 9/10

This is War is my album of the year. All the songs are incredible and performed with passion that only 30STM possess, which is wht i have liked the band so much. Thay have shamed their critics and the actors band label is a thing of the past. 30STM are one of the best bands on the planet and with this album, they have cemented their names into rock history. Your Echelons are proud!

This Is War is a masterpiece! If you loved A Beautiful Lie then you will love this!

Was It Worth Staying Up Till Past Midnight For?

My internet connection is appaling - I've been waiting for the album to finish downloading for 43 minutes now.
I realise how irrelevant this information is, but it does loosely aid my review in the sense that I've only had a chance to listen to 'Escape' and 'Kings And Queens' and already this album has sent shivers down my spine.
The narrative of both songs is so epic, the guitar riffs so polished and the sound so embracing - on first impressions, this is a must have album for all 30 Seconds To Mars fans.

Excellent Third Album

Well, I usually like to write fairly detailed reviews, but I have been beaten to the punch by CSI Browne! Anyway, about the album: This third attempt brings the music of 30STM up a step. This album has a very "Epic" feel to it. Yes, the heavier guitar riffs maybe absent, but this is no demoralizing factor for this album. Also I have to say this album has a very AVA meets 30secondstomars mixed wth elements of pure genious to it. This album is more technical, and as said before, the lyrical content is much more advanced and darker than the previous two releases. There is not a track here that is not good, if you liked 30STMs' previous albums, you have to view this one in a different way and appreciate the musical talent put into this album. it is different, put if all albums were to be the same, music would not be as diverse as it is and should be. One thing that slightly annoyed me when looking through these reviuews was the ignorance of one reviewer, giving this album 1 star because there was no Kanye West on Hurricane. Seriously, you rate an entire album on one song, and one tiny part (Kanye only had a small part anyway)..? Anyway...this is how i rate the album: Escape: 8/10 Night of The Hunter: 8/10 Kings and Queens: 10/10 This Is War: 10/10 100 Suns: 7/10 Hurricane: 8/10 Closer to the Edge: 10/10 Vox Populi: 9/10 Search and Destroy: 9/10 Alibi: 8/10 Stranger in a Strange Land: 8/10 L490: 5/10
