iTunes Review

Lonely hearts who stay in to watch King of Queens, guys who crush on the lady at the DMV window, people who relocate every few years to escape themselves vs. those who never change a single thing, a Fountains of Wayne album is like a collection of short stories that just happen to have melodies and catchy choruses. They even come with specific names. (That’s Beth Mackenzie watching TV and Yolanda Hayes working the DMV.) Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood write what they know and do so with an informed knowledge of pop music history, so there are Burt Bacharach touches among the early 80s grooves in “Strapped for Cash,” while much late-70s new wave is reborn in the band’s motoring rhythms for “This Better Be Good.”  “Fire in the Canyon” presses country-rock into service. 80s synth-pop takes control of the title track. But the band always begins with the harmony-heavy, guitar-based pop rock that takes the finer points of the Beatles, Raspberries and Squeeze and turns them into contemporary commentary.

Best album of the year so far...

I've listened to pretty much every album that's come out this year because it's my job and believe me, if you like verses stronger than most band's choruses, a voice that pulls you in and keeps you warm and lyrics worthy of Carver or Fitzgerald then this is the album for you. I loved the last album but this one is consistently brilliant from beginning to end. Avoid if you don't like music that much.

All things to all men....and women

As ever with the FOW they have put together another eclectic mix of songs to think about, rock, humm and snuggle too all at the same time. You will find your own favourites but each song has an uncanny knack of contain a line that you connect with on a persomal level. My Easter bunnies will be burning up their duracells to Traffic & Weather April 07!.

4.75 stars

The Fountains, as ever, have come up trumps yet again with a collection of wonderful lyrics. Each track painting its light hearted, yet heart felt story, in rocky harmony over a fresh, state side, indie sounding, guitar centred backdrop. Their lyrics will make you smile, listen again and again, each story unfolds a little further with every listen. If you’re new to the Fountains try their self titled 2004 album ‘Fountains of Wayne’, it has some of their all time classics: Survival car; Sink to the bottom; Radiation Vibe; Leave the biker. That’s the album I’d gladly award 5 stars to every time. This latest work is also brilliant, and a close second, a very well deserved 4.75 stars. If you’re looking for instant entertainment then this isn’t the Fountains album for you, if you prepared to get to know it, it’ll be a joy to listen to for years to come. Download, smile and enjoy.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Although Fountains of Wayne didn't enjoy mainstream attention until the release of "Stacy's Mom" in 2003, the band had already established itself as one of America's strongest power pop acts. Based in New Jersey, the group first appeared in 1996 with a mix of British-influenced pop songs, lo-fi production, and wry lyrics about dead-end jobs and biker boyfriends. Fountains of Wayne expanded their lineup and polished up their sound during the following years, eventually hitting gold with 2003's Welcome...
