Album Review
After Peter Gabriel departed for a solo career, Genesis embarked on a long journey to find a replacement, only to wind back around to their drummer, Phil Collins, as a replacement. With Collins as their new frontman, the band decided not to pursue the stylish, jagged postmodernism of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway — a move that Gabriel would do in his solo career — and instead returned to the English eccentricity of Selling England by the Pound for its next effort, A Trick of the Tail. In almost every respect, this feels like a truer sequel to Selling England by the Pound than Lamb; after all, that double album was obsessed with modernity and nightmare, whereas this album returns the group to the fanciful fairy tale nature of its earlier records. Also, Genesis were moving away from the barbed pop of the first LP and returning to elastic numbers that showcased their instrumental prowess, and they sounded more forceful and unified as a band than they had since Foxtrot. Not that this album is quite as memorable as Foxtrot or Selling England, largely because its songs aren't as immediate or memorable: apart from "Dance on a Volcano," this is about the sound of the band playing, not individual songs, and it succeeds on that level quite wildly — to the extent that it proved to longtime fans that Genesis could possibly thrive without its former leader in tow.
Customer Reviews
The last truly outstanding Genesis album
There is a definite shift in musical emphasis here - the more esoteric moments of 'The Lamb' and 'Foxtrot' are replaced by the rich, powerful and layered sound which would define the next stage of Genesis. Although different, it works extremely well and there isn't a weak track on the album. Worth noting how different this band sounds to the one without Steve Hackett - an underrated influence on the archetypal Genesis sound. With Gabriel's departure the lyrical content has simplified and become totally secondary to the music - a feature which alienated many. Highlights: Entangled, Los Endos, Dance on a Volcano.
A trick of the remix
I love this album and with the remix you can hear the parts played much clearer. Entangled is beautiful and mad man moon is one of the bands best songs inthe collins era.Turn the lights off and relive the dark days of the 70's.!
A favourite and a classic
Asked to choose my two favourite Genesis albums, it would almost certainly be this one and Selling England By The Pound, with the latter having a slight edge. What lifts this one (having got over the - at the time alarming - discovery that Gabriel's departure seemed to have had little effect) is the careful sequencing of the songs : a rocker like Dance On A Volcano is followed by the gentle Entangled, followed in turn by the weighty Squonk. It could have seemed contrived but doesn't seem so in actuality. Robbery... is probably the least successful of all their 'comedy' numbers, but really there isn't a weak track on the album. Indeed, Dance On A Volcano, Mad Man Moon (with its poignant imagery : "on a muddy pitch at Newcastle" haha), and Ripples, are three of my all-time favourite Genesis tracks. There is a fullness and tightness in the playing which is lacking on Foxtrot - the band has got its act together since those earlier days. For me, the best of Genesis is the 'middle period' beginning with Selling England.. and ending with Duke. This album sits in there, up there, with the best.
