Album Review

Brit-pop has never been performed better than on the Stone Roses' self-titled debut album. Coming somewhere near to it, however, is this, Turns into Stone. Admittedly, Turns into Stone isn't made up of entirely original material. Rather, the album is a sort of "best of the Stone Roses' B-sides." Fortunately, these are B-sides of exceptional quality. Included in the track list is perhaps the bands finest moment, "Fools Gold." The track is driven along by Reni's domineering drumming, and Mani's understated bassline, while Squire impresses with his lead and Brown sings a rather sinister, but catchy, melody. While the album's approach has taken on a dancy edge, if you will, on the whole, Turns into Stone retains the guitar-driven musical style that dominated the Stone Roses' debut. Despite not being quite as consistent as the previously mentioned release, Turns into Stone has all the hallmarks of a great Brit-pop album, and will delight those who enjoyed the band's first release.

Manna

In answer to your question, this was a cash-in collection of B-Sides and one-off singles by Silvertone - the label The 'Roses battled with to get out of their contract and for many, the reason they ran out of steam. Unlike many B-Sides albums though, this truly shows what a creative peak the Roses were on. As well as the Fools Gold/What The World Is Wating For double A side, you also get Something's Burning - for many Roses fans a far superior song to it's A Side One Love. However, these groove-laden singles aren't the highlights. The opening drum salvo from the one true genius in the band - Reni - explodes into the blistering pychedilic pop of Elephant Stone; Mersey Paradise would be an album's lead single for most young bands, not a throwaway B-Side to the actual lead single She Bangs The Drums; and Where Angels Play, well, that's a song Ian Brown is still playing live today. For those of us wating and wating for the second coming, having all these tunes in one place felt like a second album on its own.

where angels play

worth the money for the outro of 'where angels play' alone...

Superb Collection

What seperates a great band from a good band is that even their b-sides are the boll@cks.

Meshing '60s-styled guitar pop with an understated '80s dance beat, the Stone Roses defined the British guitar pop scene of the late '80s and early '90s. After their eponymous 1989 debut album became an English sensation, countless other groups in the same vein became popular, including the Charlatans UK, Inspiral Carpets, and Happy Mondays. However, the Stone Roses were never able to capitalize on the promise of their...
