Customer Reviews

Years ahead of its time, and still brilliant!

25 years later it is difficult to remember how ahead of its time this album was when it was released.
Miles was 60 years old when this was released and I had the pleasure to see him live twice. His band on both occassions were all under 30 , most of them a lot lot younger.
I played this constantly at the time and look forward to reaquainting myself with thisw album and the live takes.
Highly recommended for anyone discovering Miles Davis for the first time, showing his great skill of changing his style with the times unlike his contempories, the David Bowie of his genre.
Marcus Miller who wrote most of the material on this deserves huge praise for creating one of the best modern Jazz albums of all time.
The hairs on the back of my back still stand up to the fantastic crescendo ending of "Tutu", and the beautiful haunting melody of "Portia" timeless as ever.

Not for Miles, he saw and heard what was going on in music and embraced it, and with this album proved to everyone that he was still right up there, attracting a new audienve decades younger than himself.

Years Active: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s

Throughout a professional career lasting 50 years, Miles Davis played the trumpet in a lyrical, introspective, and melodic style, often employing a stemless Harmon mute to make his sound more personal and intimate. But if his approach to his instrument was constant, his approach to jazz was dazzlingly protean. To examine his career is to examine the history of jazz from the mid-'40s to the early '90s, since he was in the thick of almost every important innovation and stylistic development in the...
