Album Review

Piles of Bananarama compilations were released from the late '80s through the early 2000s, and they represent the group's past with varying degrees of success, but this disc is the first to concentrate solely on the 12" mixes. Some of the tracks are making their first appearance on CD, so it certainly has some level of appeal to collectors. The highlights include the "Extended Club Mix" of "Venus," the "Extended Mix" of "Really Saying Something," and the "Number One Mix" of "Trick of the Night." Make no mistake: this is no substitute for a proper best-of disc, such as 1988's The Greatest Hits Collection or 2002's The Very Best of Bananarama.

Bananatatic

OMG! Trick Of The Night 12" Mix!!!!!! I thought this track had been lost in the vaults of PWL along with Shooting Party and Mandy Smith! It might be a rip off of Princess' "say I'm Your Number One" but it's done with class and even samples the original vocal. Pure PWL pleasure! Another lost Nana classic "More Than Physical" is also included on this rather unexpected jem of a collection (it you're a fan). The girls may have a reputation for naff, gay, 80s disposable disco pop but ....hey boy... they can write a tune! Good to see the George Michael mix of "Tripping..." as it's only avaliable on some obscure 7inch and Shep Pettibone's beefed up version of "Preacher Man" getting a long over due reprise. Together with the classics.... Venus, I heard a Rumour, et all..this is a great package for all you Banananerds and 80s fans. WOW!

Nice idea, shame about the mastering...

This kind of release is a fans' dream - long forgotten versions of hit songs that mostly only existed as crackly vinyl lurking in the back of your wardrobe. Unfortunately, that's exactly how some of the cuts on this release have been sourced - there seems to be no master tape for the version of "A Trick of the Night" that's included here, as what we get is a crackly vinyl rip, complete with the sound of the needle hitting the turntable at the beginning! Yeah, it's a budget release (which can be sourced for about a fiver on CD) but for the full album whack on iTunes? Some tiering is needed in pricing, I think.

Take It All

And still, iTunes, we wait for their 80's promos'. You can't deny us those boy dancers forever ...

The most successful British girl group in pop history, Bananarama formed in London in late 1981. Drawing equal inspiration for their name from the children's television program The Banana Splits and the Roxy Music song "Pyjamarama," the trio was comprised of lifelong friends Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin along with Siobhan Fahey, whom Dallin befriended at the London College of Fashion. After getting their start singing at friends' parties and at nightclubs (where they performed accompanied by backing...
