iTunes Review

Bat for Lashes’ debut, Fur and Gold, catapulted British singer Natasha Khan to indie rock glory. Her brand of airy, fragile trilling and lush, sparkling piano and strings so enraptured critics and fans alike that she wisely stayed the course on Two Suns, this time adding a faint dusting of other musical flavors beyond the Kate Bush/Tori Amos school of Diva Dramaturgy. “Sleep Alone” starts with a lone, thrumming guitar string, the arrangement and Khan’s voice conjuring the classic folk sounds of Fairport Convention, before ghostly drums and rattling percussion carry it off to another world; a gospel choir lifts the dark “Peace of Mind” into a spiritual realm, and tribal poly rhythms drive “Two Planets” into a swirling, global kaleidoscope. There’s even a touch of Brechtian theatrics in “The Big Sleep”, with a cameo by the enigmatic Scott Walker.  “Moon and Moon” and the single, “Daniel”, are heartbreakingly beautiful, both tracks pining for something that has vanished (one a real love, and another that is fictional).  When Khan sings, “I’m one of two planets dancing...”, one doesn’t stop to ponder whether it can be true. One simply goes along for the ride.

An Incredible Follow up

A truly mesmerising and highly imaginative album....easily worthy of the praise earned by Fur and Gold. The album takes you on a journey through what sounds like a failed relationship, through the extreme highs and lows... Much more personal than its predecessor, at points, the album hits some genuinely emotional affecting moments. Two Suns has some real songwiting gems, notably 'Daniel, Glass, Moon and Moon and Pearl's Dream'.

At last

Bowie, Lenox, Kate bush; this album meshes the sounds of the greats and achieves something original and complex. Its nice to know music hasnt completely lost its soul to clubland 'classics.'

Magic

I awaited with breath that was bated for BFL's 2nd album, worrying that it would be a difficult 2nd album - but oh joy! It is wonderful. Another album of magical songs that thread together to tell another great story. It has Natasha Khan's signature style - innovative, beautiful, unusual and imaginative. I am so very happy, and very much looking forward to seeing them live next week. I mean this entirely as a compliment, but I sniff more of a Kate Bush influence on this album, especially on "Travelling Woman"...Siren Song also sends shivers down my spine.

Brighton, England's Bat for Lashes is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Natasha Khan. The Pakistan-born Khan pulls from her art school education and her experience producing multimedia installations when it comes to writing songs. She also cites Steve Reich and Susan Hiller as influences, while echoes of Björk and Siouxsie Sioux are heard throughout Bat for Lashes' mystical indie rock sound. Bat for Lashes' first single, "The Wizard," was digitally released by DiS, and issued as a 7" on Khan's...
