iTunes Review
It’s hard to fathom that Keane is a guitar-less trio. Their drums-bass-keyboards approach is so ornate, lush, and atmospheric that their every tune turns into a pocket symphony rife with melodrama. That they could approach this grand mastery without the usual six-string culprit is a singular achievement. This East Sussex, UK trio have never met a special effect they couldn’t twist to their advantage and their second studio album, Under the Iron Sea, utilizes their sonic expertise to massive effect. In the tradition of early Radiohead (before they became an art project), Coldplay, and U2 (for whom they opened on tour), Keane combine this profound love for ambient atmospherics with song emphasizing fancy melodies that push singer Tom Chaplin’s voice all over the scale. The unexpected success of their debut album – two Brit awards, a Grammy nomination, actual record sales – stressed the band to the near breaking-up point and that tension, along with a deteriorating world situation, fuels the melancholic strains of “Leaving So Soon?,” “A Bad Dream” and “Hamburg Song.”

A grower
Yes, this album is the kind that grows on you. First listen, not particularly impressed, but on a second listen, it all sounds quite impressive really. I like the freaky instrumental Iron Sea, plus the touching Hamburg Song, and the catchy Crystal Ball, A Bad Dream and Is It Any Wonder, of course. Some of the extra tracks, such as Try Again and Nothin In My Way, have some wonderful lyrics to them, and some cool breaks. Very dark indeed...seems to be the staple of 21st Century Alternative/Indie now...
Oh, Chris de Burgh...
How different it is to 'Hopes and Fears'...far darker and mysterious. Simply by opening the album with the emotive and searching B-Side 'Atlantic', we immediately hear that this is going to be a completely different album. The ordering of the songs can initially appear strange, and the lack of another slow song towards the end is also odd. But it's much darker, and the ordering begins to make sense on further listenings. The vocal talent of Chaplin is wonderful throughout, but the high notes in 'Leaving So Soon' are sung to perfection; these are notes that anybody but Chaplin couldn't even hope to reach. The immediacy and youthful energy from 'Hopes and Fears' is seemingly a little absent here, but even from the opening songs in both, you can tell this is more mature, and over time, a potentially more rewarding experience. 'A Bad Dream' and 'Hamburg Song' are the highlight of the album; two wonderful ballads. However, it is evident that Keane wanted to install one song with the 'Hopes and Fears' sound- hence the reason why 'Put it Behind You' doesn't fit in this album. Whilst this is a more challenging listen, darker and mysterious, it doesn't have the youthful energy and vibe that its predecessor had, although a new sound for a band is never a bad thing. Far too many bands get stuck in their "comfort zone", something which Keane are evidently not afraid to step away from. It's not 'Hopes and Fears', but in my opinion, over time it will be just as good, and possibly even better. Oh, and the Chris de Burgh thing? You try listening to 'Crystal Ball' without the lyrics booklet...
The best just got better!!!
I went to Amsterdam to see Keane at The Paradiso Club. They played the new album plus the old favourites from the wonderful 'Hopes and Fears'. They were awesome live and the album delivers a superb cross section of music from Tom, Tim and Richard! All I can say is WELL DONE BOYS!!! We love you and I personally couldn't wait for this release which is everything that I hoped for. Download and enjoy! xxx
