If you liked the Jayhawks....

.....then this is the best thing until they release any new material. Why it's taken Gary Louris so long to release this, his debut solo lp, is anybody's guess. Well, it's been well worth the wait. I agree with the previous reviewer, in that these songs sit in-between the poppier 'Smile' and the countrified Bryds-like last release 'Rainy Day Music'. Gary's harmonies have never been better and the songs and production is solid. Highlights for me have to be 'Black Grass', We'll Get By', 'D.C.Blues' 'True Blue' and 'To Die A Happy Man'. The tacked on tracks(courteousy of i-tunes) 11 & 12 slightly ruin the ambience and would fair better as the b-sides that they were intended for. Still, this aside, this is a mature and rewarding album to savour, you won't regret this purchase. Roll on the Mark Olsen reunion later this year.....
