Album Review

While it isn't a gutsy rock & roll record like Your Arsenal, Vauxhall and I is equally impressive. Filled with carefully constructed guitar pop gems, the album contains some of Morrissey's best material since the Smiths. Out of all of his solo albums, Vauxhall and I sounds the most like his former band, yet the textured, ringing guitar on this record is an extension of his past, not a replication of it. In fact, with songs like "Now My Heart Is Full" and "Hold on to Your Friends," Morrissey sounds more comfortable and peaceful than he ever has. And "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get," "Speedway," and "Spring-Heeled Jim" prove that he hasn't lost his vicious wit.

Come to Vauxhall and I will show you the way

This is one of my favourite albums ever. This is as true as night follows day. I love every single one of the songs on here and I believe this, along with his solo debut, Viva Hate, is Morrissey's artistic peak. This album, even on first listen, is pure, raw, sometimes hard-to-deal-with, emotion. Morrissey sounds almost in tears on every single song, but not in a crass or false way. As far as I'm concerned, Morrrissey has always been the antithesis of crassness and falseness anyway. Those of you out there who are still big on the melodic works of The Beatles and their solo carreers may not like this, but music has moved on for the better since then. There is nothing genius about an A-C-G-A chord sequence now, is there? Morrissey's best assett is his intelligence, and combined with beautiful, flowing songs and ace production, Morrissey truly delivers the goods here. My favourite song on this has got to be "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" as it defies convention and Morrissey's voice sounds so vulnerable, almost as though it could trail away into nothingness at any moment. I also love the hard-faced "Speedway" for it's lyric about thwarted love, "The Lazy Sunbathers" and "Spring Heeled Jim", although, to be honest, all the songs are amazing. The two singles taken from the album are some of Morrissey's finest ever and I would recommend this to anyone who is going through a hard time... not because this will make it easier to deal with, but because you'll have someone on your side.

Vauxhall & I

This is one of my all time favourite albums. Although rarely mentioned in the same breath I feel it manages to better all of Morrissey's output with the Smiths. It is just a masterful album from start to finish, not one song could be described as a filler. Vauxhall & I has a vibrancy and a sense of enthusiasm that Morrissey has only rediscovered intermittently in subsequent albums. My personal favourite track is the album closer, "Speedway", with its building sense of drama it is a fitting finale to a perfect album. I advise you to buy and savour this criminally underrated album.

Morrissey excels again...

An excellent album, showing that Morrissey could create tracks to rank alongside The Smiths. Apart from the excellent 'The More You...", the songs are nearly all memorable; my standouts (but it keeps changing) are 'Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself' and 'The Lazy Sunbathers'. Superb melodies allied to wicked (both meanings) lyrics.

As the lead singer of the Smiths, arguably the most important indie band in Britain during the '80s, Morrissey's theatrical crooning and literate, poetic lyrics — filled with romantic angst, social alienation, and cutting wit — connected powerfully with a legion of similarly sensitive, disaffected youth. These fans turned The Smiths into stars in Britain, exerting tremendous pull over much of the country's guitar-based music for many years after their breakup, and even if the group remained...
