Perfect Electronica

Everything about this album is superb: the artwork; the music; the style - I mean, just look at the cover. Many regard the 80s as the apotheosis of style, but compared with what had gone just months before, these guys looked sharp. 'Vienna' itself is a masterpiece of new romanticism - dark, minimal, inscrutable. John Foxx went on to other things but really wasn't missed. This album helped to define an era, and its legacy is all-too apparent in today's electronica. And just to be picky for a moment - Vienna, the single, never made No. 1 in the UK, being famously kept off the top spot by Joe Dolce.

Takes me RIGHT back!

This takes me RIGHT back! I was a HUGE Ultravox fan 'back in the day'. I had all their stuff on vinyl (still do, somewhere!) and was prompted to hunt them down on iTunes after seeing Midge Ure on TV recently. Yes, it may sound a little dated and self indulgent in places but when the mix of synth and guitar is right many of these tracks can quite easily stand along side alot of todays guitar based/indie bands. A couple - 'New Europeans' and 'All Stood Still' for example - I can imagine being covered by the likes of Robbie Williams (listen to his covers on 'Rudebox' and you'll see what I mean). Later albums – ‘Lament’ in particular - were more polished but 'Vienna' is what I think of as being classic Ultravox. For those of us who remember them it's good nostalgic stuff. For those who don't remember or only know the single, treat yourself to something a little different. Enjoy!

Ageless rock...

What can you not say about this album, one of the greatest in the history of British music. Everyone knows the single and think of only that with Ultravox, but this album proved their versatility and shown even greater in their later albums. It's not all synthesizers - there's a great mix of electric guitar and classical violins. Astradyne - great introduction that would not go amiss in Ibiza New Europeans - Classic anthem that depicted the era, yet seems as apt today Private Lives - Piano and Electric Guitar mix to give classical rock Passing Strangers - weakest song on the almum, but holds a certain romance Sleepwalk - a break through track Mr.X - EVERYONE LOVES THIS TRACK!!!! Western Promise - My personal favourite and a bit "Chemical Brothers" maybe Vienna - You'll all know this one All Stood Still - Great rock track that just as easily hit the charts today as it did back then (No. 8) The rest of the tracks are B sides from the singles. An absolute must for anyones record collection!!!!

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Rejecting the abrasive guitars of their punk-era contemporaries in favor of lushly romantic synthesizers, Ultravox emerged as one of the primary influences on the British electro-pop movement of the early '80s. Formed in London in 1974, the group — originally dubbed Ultravox! — was led by vocalist and keyboardist John Foxx (born Dennis Leigh), whose interest in synths and cutting-edge technology began during his school years. With an initial lineup consisting of bassist Chris Cross, keyboardist/violinist...
