Long live Coldplay

In its won right this is an outstanding song, especially when compared to the current rubbish on offer (Scouting For Girls, The Hoosiers etc.), so its good to see a British band finally restoring some credibility to the market; but then, when you compare it to the rest of their back-catalogue, this song becomes even more incredible. A real evolution has taken place here, away from the weepy Coldplay of old, towards a crunchier, rougher, more primal Coldplay here. Don't get me wrong, I loved the old Coldplay, but this marks a new dawn, and with it a mini-reinvention. Lyrically it is amongst their best; on X&Y I felt the lyrics were embarassingly poor at times, but this shows a real poetic nature running through Chris Martin. The momentum builds thanks to some heavy bass, and the clunky guitar interuptions separate not only lines of lyrics from eachother, but mark the separation between the new model of Coldplay and the model of the past- Fix You this is not. Martin's vocal is not as polished as it was on X&Y, allowing more realism and emotion to creep in. The falsetto line is the closest thing to a chorus, another key feature- no rigid structure. In the past, Coldplay singles have been perfect pop, radio friendly, verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle-chorus, standard structure. Here it all seems to blend into one, with only the uber-funky guitar solo in the middle to separate it and lead it towards its climax. Jonny Buckland, so often overlooked and underrated in the past, plugs in here, but instead of matching the primal chords of before, just oozes cool over the customary piano-twinklings of his frontman. The end is brilliant, Martin leading the band out with a piano and vocal solo, showing that they are not a completely different band, and perhaps suggesting what this song could have turned out like were it not for the far superior production of Brian Eno. The signs are more than promising, the most highly anticipated release of the year seems sure not to disappoint, and though it has a lot to live up to, it seems that Cldplay are heading in the right direction, which is good news for British music, and its listeners.

free

you can get this song for free of the coldplay website but is very good

Shall I say it first?

First off this is a class song, a new and welcoming sound for Coldplay but it can be downloaded for free off their website unless theyve taken it off now... and if they have, shame on them. Its still classic Coldplay but a more adventurous and interesting take on their type of music. I cannot wait to hear what the albums like on the strength of this.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. The group's emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic experimentation on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants....
