Album Review

Despite its unmatched historical legacy as the birthplace and key proving ground for progressive rock throughout the decades, Great Britain has curiously yielded precious few progressive metal bands of note, but this trend is something that the members of Haken are clearly eager to change. The London group's sophomore album, Visions, arrives barely one year after its predecessor, and merely three since the band's inception, and while it still owes a huge aesthetic debt to longstanding melodic prog metal powers such as Dream Theater, Stratovarius, and Symphony X, the high standards of invention contained herein ultimately remind listeners that this particular sandbox is big enough for everyone to play in. What's more, Visions clearly shows musical growth compared to the previous year's Aquarius, by tightening arrangements as Haken's songs continually morph dynamically, sharpening the balance between songwriting acumen and the mandatory displays of instrumental prowess. Most importantly, perhaps, these tracks reveal a far more confident, much improved performance from singer Ross Jennings, who's no longer the whiny beeotch of yore (at his worse, he sounded like an even more limp version of Yes' Jon Anderson). In fact, while he's hardly the star of the show and won't be pleasing the extreme crowd by abandoning the occasional death growl, Jennings is now hanging tough with his talented bandmates, every one of whom contributes something special (jazz piano solo, churning bass solo, endless flashy guitar, and percussive flurries) to early album statement "Nocturnal Conspiracy," a 13-minute epic showcasing the length and breadth of Haken's present evolutionary state. This ranges from Porcupine Tree to Opeth (and not a Steve Wilson is in sight), taking in additional epics (the aptly named "Shapeshifter") and shorter tunes alike (with special kudos to the excellent instrumental "Portals"), while flirting with everything from pulsing electronics ("Insomnia") to classical piano and soft rock sensibilities ("Deathless") in between. Yes, the 22-minute title track, containing more of the same and still much, much more musical variety/insanity, may simply prove too grossly self-indulgent for everyone to stomach, but then, maybe not if you've made it this far and still can't be bothered by the overt Dream Theater influences mentioned earlier. All of which means that Visions isn't exactly a proud new flagship in Her Royal Majesty's Progressive Rock (H.R.M.P.R.) navy, but it's pretty darn seaworthy nonetheless.

Already my favourite album

Haken's first release "Aquarius" was, in my opinion, an absolute masterpiece, and the prog community as a whole regarded it as one of the best debut albums for a very long time. This made it a hard act to follow, and I have to say Visions is even better. The sound of the two albums are very different - this is much more serious, and I have to say the only bad thing I can pick up is that less of Ross' immensely varied vocal techniques are on display. But on the other hand the album is a melting pot of excellence. The balance between metal, jazz influences and even circus-type soundtrack is brilliant. I really can't do this album justice here, my linguistic skills aren't good enough. If you enjoy prog or technical prowess then this album is an absolute must. It's where many wished Dream Theater would go, and yet I feel they do it better. Tid new, relatively u heard of abdn is one to watch. Buy this you won't regret it.

Ingenious... Go Haken Bacon!

This follow-up album from their debut pushes the unmovable force of progressive rock to the point of no return! I am really surprised that not many people like this kind of music...Before you buy this masterpiece of artistic genius; take a moment out of your purchase time to take a read of what gems this treasure chest holds...

Premonition 8/10 - Good opening! When you listen to the entire album, this song seems like an instrumental summary of the entire concept of the album. Good guitar tones, and harsh drum hits throughout...

Nocturnal Conspiracy - 9/10 This song shows Ross's power in his voice and has some great dynamical changes!

Insomnia - 8/10 If you like technicality and intense guitar solos, this is the track for you! Also the stings at the end create a brill atmosphere!

The Mind's Eye - 7/10 Nice melodies from keyboards, shortest song from both albums but carries straight through to Shapeshifter. Very impressive bundle!

Portals - 8/10 What an instrumental track this is! Intense guitars and great time signatures throughout. Keyboard solo really shows the level of skill and dedication! Well done!

Shapeshifter - 9/10 - This track is probably the most similar to the debut album (as there is some carnival-type keyboards to open with awesome riffage) great 'drop' with and before chorus and like the break before the next track.

Deathless - 5/10 - The only song that this album that strikes me as too plain to fit the rest of the album. However this is just my opinion, you may love it just as much as the others!

Visions-10/10 - Well... what to say? Il' be honest, the first listen through I wasn't very happy ( wanted some Celestial Elixir influence =D!! ). However it wasn't even 24 hours before I was giving this track the feedback it deserves. PURE-ULTRA-EPIC-JOURNEY TO AWESOME!! 22 mins was just not enough... Now 43.5 mins! That’s what we want haha! Looking at the musical structure of this song, its like a snowflake... precision and a unique crystal clear structure identify and justify the brilliance that the song has. Someone explained the preceding album as a 'emotional roller-coaster' and that is true of this song.

'Visions' (album) - 9.8/10 Overall thoughts of this album? The concept idea of 'Visions' being a premonition of Ross's own death is a pretty intense subject that fits the musical influence of this album perfectly. With the beautiful range of guitar tones, technically harsh drumming style, awesome bass lines structures and clever riffs, top notch keyboards throughout and truly stunning vocals, this piece of progressive art will confidently stand the test of time! I will have to say that the first album is still better... BUT this should not affect your purchase whatsoever! No sir! So why not help Haken by paying for this album (rather than looking for alternative downloads) and funding the bands efforts?
Massive thanks and well done to Haken and hope they enjoy their musical career in the future!
