Album Review

Beverley Knight was responsible for some classy soulful singles throughout the late '90s and into the new century but she had never managed however to attain much in the way of album sales, her best effort to date being the number seven Who I Am from 2002. So the climate was ripe for a greatest-hits collection which EMI hoped would place her in a more adult-oriented market. Voice was very representative of her body of work, containing 15 tracks in total and three bonus tracks, including a version of Chaka Khan's "Sweet Thing," and a live cover of Robbie Williams' career-defining hit "Angels," recorded for Radio 2 with a simple piano background and a gospel-style vocal. Of the 12 remaining tracks, every one had been a hit single from her debut back in 1995: "Flavour of the Old School," complete with its formulaic rap break, through to her then-most recent hits "Keep This Fire Burning," and a brave attempt at an R&B version of Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart." Her music ranged from the ultra smooth ballads "Gold" and "Who's Gonna Save Your Soul" to the Chic-"Good Times" sampled "Made It Back," and the '70s disco influenced "Greatest Day." Although she had been hitting the charts quite regularly since 1995, albeit not that close to the top, it was with the dance track "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" in 2002 that she finally broke through to the Top Ten and the album opens with this hit. In fact, the first four tracks were her two biggest singles, including 2004's "Come as You Are," and the two most recent hits: the Joplin track and "Keep This Fire Burning."

A Great Collection from an underrated talent!, that may be her last work so get it fast!

Shoulda Woulda Coulda, a Great up beat song with a catchy hook and poignant lyrics. One of Beverley Knights bigger hits. Keep This Fire Burning not penned by Miss Knight herself but another crowd pleaser from the album Affirmation. Come As You Are, a foot tapping, summer record with Tina Turner esque undercurrents weaving along the melody. Piece of My Heart the Janis Joplin cover well she does it justice if not better but Erma Franklin did a version and who can compare to that?, but Beverley Matches it with ease. Gold is a lush ballad with fantastic heartfelt lyrics. Made it Back is such an anthem, a come back, a record anyone should have on there I Pod to play when they are feeling life is getting them down. Get Up!, a powerful Reggae, dance floor filler with a strong lyrical message and a fabulous beat! Flavour of the Old School, from Beverley's first album the B Funk not a great song but a starter record that thankfully Beverley has grown and developed from. Sista Sista, Haunting Melody and Great vocal power and control. Not Too Late For Love, one of the poorer tracks from Affirmation, bad and repeptitive drum machine. The Track ends up lifeless and banal. Greatest Day, Amazing Summer record, positive and a total full of life rhythmic record. Made it Back original version not as good as the earlier edition, bit bland and lifeless. Sweet Thing, as always Beverley is breathtaking live but the song is a bit dull. Angels with Guy Chambers, the guy who made Robbie what he was, Beverley does a good job of the song Robbie Williams originally sung and penned the lyrics for. But Beverley is best at the delivery of her own selfpenned songs as it comes across a lot more sincere. Who's Gonna Save Your Soul, a sultry, slick bonus and worth a listen.

She Keeps This Fire Burning

11 years in the music business and Beverley Knight releases her first Greatest Hits collection and it has definitely been worth the wait. Beverley has struggled to surpass the 'oh she sang that song' catagory but her back catalogue is suprisingly large with several singles having to be left off the album. But the highest charters are present and tend to open the album. Knight's version of 'Angels' makes her version soul and makes it a totally different and meaningful track putting Robbie to shame. The big hits of Come As You Are and Shoulda Woulda Coulda are present. The album shows how versatile Beverley is and this album is worth every penny, no hesistations with Five stars.
