Album Review

Slipknot set out to construct the ultimate metal music flamethrower, ever since their genesis in a Des Moines, IA, basement. But they also deployed an agitprop campaign of masks, smocks, and bar codes that helped scare parents (like good metal should) and transform Slipknot fans into faithful "maggots." The Midwestern origin of all this craziness is genius, as the band's marrow-draining metal and twisted, fibrous mythology is antithetical to the region's milquetoast rep. Still, after the gothic nausea of 2001's Iowa, Slipknot's vitality dissipated in clouds of gaseous hype and individual indulgence. Had they grown fat on their thrones? Probably. But the layoff only makes Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses scream louder. Working with famously bearded helmer Rick Rubin — aka He Who Smites Bullsh*t — Slipknot pour the shrill accessibility of their self-titled debut down Iowa's dark sieve, and the result is flinty, angry, and rewardingly restless. Vol. 3 shares its lyrical themes of anger, disaffection, and psychosis with most of Slipknot's nu-metal peers. Lines like "I've screamed until my veins collapsed" and "Push my fingers into my eyes/It's the only thing that slowly stops the ache" (from the otherwise strong "Duality") aren't unique to this cult. But unlike so many, the band's sound rarely disassembles into genre building blocks: riff + glowering vocal + throaty chorus = Ozzfest acceptance. What makes Vol. 3 tick is the dedication to making it a Slipknot album, and not just another flashy alt-metal billboard. The seething anger and preoccupation with pain is valid because it's componential to the group's uniquely branded havoc. "Blister Exists," "Three Nil," and "Opium of the People" are all standouts, strafing soft underbellies with rhythmic (occasionally melodic) vocals, stuttering, quadruple-helix percussion, and muted grindcore guitar. Rubin is integral to the album's power — his cataclysmic vocal filters and arrays of unidentifiable squiggle and squelch unite Vol. 3's various portions in wildly different ways. Just when the meditative "Circles" threatens to keel over from melodrama, in sputters strings of damaged electronics and percussion to lead it into "Welcome," which sounds like Helmet covering Relapse Records' entire catalog at once. Later, another counterpoint is offered, when the swift boot kicks of "Pulse of the Maggots" and "Before I Forget" separate "Vermilion"'s gothic and acoustic parts. Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses doesn't feel like Slipknot's final statement. It's a satisfying, carefully crafted representation of their career to date. But there's a sense that whatever Slipknot do next might be their ultimate broadcast to the faithful. [Roadrunner released a bonus track edition of Vol. 3.]

Vol 3 The Subliminal Verses

This is one of the best albums i have ever bought. Slipknot are a great metal band and the music they make has so much anger in it, which is why i think i first tried listening to them. But this album is a really great album. Their was a few surprises in the album as well, with some song being quite soft compared to their previous albums, these include Circle, Vermillion and Danger Keep Away. But hte best songs on the album come from Duality, Before i Forget, Vermillion Pt 2, The Blister Exists, Pulse Of The Maggots and Opium of the People. This is a must have metal album, Corey and co. go to new heights with album no.3. Which many fans of Slipknot have said it is a bad album because of the few soft tracks. But i am giving this album 10/10. Top 5 1 - Duality 2 - Before I Forget 3 - Vermillion 4 - The Blister Exists 5 - Opium of the People

Have to be honest...

I have to be honest, I fell in love with Slipknot many years ago - when all we could get was a few rubbish mp3's at like 16 bit off of the Mate Feed Kill Repeat album. Look how far they've come since then! For every band to succed i guess they have to give in to the 'man' a little, but I think this may be the start of the end guys, unfortunatley of course, but the old Thrash Slipknot that actually played something new and exciting has seemed to wither a little and given way to the post rock melodic movement. Hmm not so good. Still an awesome group of musicians though.

Slipknot have kept their word

After the Self-Titled album and Iowa, Slipknot said they were going to make a better record than Iowa. I thought to myself, "This is gonna be impossilbe". Iowa was great, with songs such as Disasterpiece and Left Behind, it made headbang until I went dizzy and almost passed out! Well, after my first listen to this, I almost couldn't believe it, like always, Slipknot kept their promise. Prelude 3.0: This is a mesh of sounds, with soft vocals in it aswell, makes a perfect intro to the album. 8/10 The Blister Exists: Continues straight after Prelude 3.0, very strong guitar and very powerful drums. 9/10 Three Nil: I absolutely love the super fast tremolo picking in the verses. 9/10 Duality: One of the best songs of the album, and a very strong meaning behind it. 10/10 Opium of the People: This song is one of the heviest in the album, Joey's drums must be pretty tight so they don't fall apart. 9/10 Circle: Very good acoustic touch to the song, with Corey's soft vocals, is very moving and indeed, awesome. 8/10 Welcome: Awesome opening riffs and vocals from yours truly, Corey Taylor. The solo is amazing.8/10 Vermillion: The third best song of the album, the solo isthe second best in the album. 10/10 Pulse of the Maggots: Comes straight after Vermillion, it's dedicated specially to us, their faithful Maggots! Incredible riffs and very powerful drums make this song simply awesome, and solo is just the best. 10/10 Before I Forget: The best song from the album, it has the best riffs, vocals and drum banging from the greatest in the world, Joey Jordison. 10/10 Vermillion, Pt. 2: The acoustic version to Vermillion, full with Mick and James and Craig on the piano, it is one of the most moving song on the album. 9/10 The Nameless: Very powerful guitars, changing to acoustic in the choruses, makes this an amazing piece by Slipknot. 8/10 The Virus of Life: A very dark song, dark vocals, dark drums, dark studio! 8/10 Danger-Keep Away: What a way for Slipknot to end an album. 9/10 Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses): Slipknot have kept their word, awesome album. 9/10 Top Songs: 1) Before I Forget 2) Duality 3) Vermillion 4) Pulse of the Maggots 5) The Blister Exists

Biography

Formed: September, 1995 in Des Moines, IA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Slipknot's mix of grinding, post-Korn alternative metal, Marilyn Manson-esque neo-shock rock, and rap-metal helped make them one of the most popular bands in the so-called nu-metal explosion of the late '90s. But even more helpful was their theatrical, attention-grabbing image: the band always performed in identical industrial jump suits and homemade Halloween masks, and added to its mysterious anonymity by adopting the numbers zero through eight as stage aliases. Add to that a lyrical...
