Disappointing

Fun as these transcriptions are, this is a disappointing set when compared to Serebrier's recent set of Stokowski's Bach transcriptions with the same orchestra. The sound is too closely miked and doesn't allow Wagner's ingenious orchestration to breathe in the way that it should. The playing itself is fine, but there isn't a sense of the scale which these works demand. That said, the Magic Fire Music is spellbinding.

Formed in 1893 by Sir Dan Godfrey, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (it should be noted that the orchestra was eventually based in Poole, but maintained the original name for tradition's sake) became a world-class and world-traveled orchestra, performing in New York, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Vienna (to name but a few).
