iTunes Review

Former Jam and Style Council leader Paul Weller has begun experiencing a creative renaissance since breaking 50. 22 Dreams brought him back into relevancy and Wake Up the Nation is a powerful and diverse collection of songs that shoots in all directions. His reunion with the Jam’s bassist Bruce Foxton for the mod-paced “Fast Car/Slow Traffic” (at under two minutes) is as rewarding as his Roy Orbison-styled “No Tears to Cry” or his unlikely pairing with My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields for “7 & 3 Is the Strikers Name”. The keyboard-led instrumental “In Amsterdam” strikes a note of nostalgia for an unspecified time. “She Speaks” loses itself in a whirlwind of piano and polyrhythms that suggest Weller could turn himself into the most unlikely of world music practitioners should he care to switch careers. “Aim High” breaks into a psychedelic funk. “Trees” adds a New Orleans gumbo piano for a sudden shot at rhythm & blues. Weller’s creating a third career with equally convincing intensity.

Wake Up The Nation ????!

I have been a huge fan of Paul Weller since the days of The Jam, having bought all of his albums from this time, with The Style Council and solo right through to 22 Dreams.

When Weller gets it right he can still write a great song - No More Tears, Aim High and the title track are examples of this. However, too many of these songs seem to be unfocused, half-finished, almost demo-like. Gone are songs of the quality of You Do Something To Me, Wild Wood and Out Of The Sinking replaced by mediocrity like Fast Car/Slow Traffic and the abysmal Two Fat Ladies.

Much has been made of Weller's music becoming much more experimental and diverse. However, style is a poor substitute for substance, which is lacking in many of these songs. It's ironic that the critics who derided him are now tripping over themselves to say how wonderful his music is, when in fact his albums since As is Now have markedly deteriorated. Overall, a huge disappointment.

Makes You Ears Sit Up!

A really great (and as always) unexpected LP from Weller.
It makes your ears sit up and is great to hear him making music that set its self apart form his own material and all the other rubbish we have to put up with today. (Scouting for girls , chipmunk , cheryl cole)
Sure weller could of done the safe of option of doing what hes done before , but what would of been the point?
Best tunes are "Aim High" , "No Tears To Cry" , "Find The Torch Burn The Plans" , "Wake Up The Nation".

WAKE UP THE NATION - PURCHASE THIS ALBUM

Paul Weller is in top form, the positive reviews this album is receiving is more than well deserbed. WUTN covers all Wellers influences from the Jam, Style Council, modfather-Britpop and more recently his trully inspired experimental phase starting with 22Dreams.
Most tunes on WUTN clock in at 2 and a half minutes or under, the result is an album which plays at a phenomenal yet consistently good rate. The pace of the album helps to cut out any excess & you get lean, punk, pop, soul tunes.
WUTN has some exceptional moments Wake up the Nation,Fast Cars Slow Traffic, Trees, No Tears to Cry,Find the Torch/Burn the Plan, Up the Dosage, to name a few.
I cannot think of another musician 30 years into their career who has written an album so fresh, up to date and in touch with the current state of the nation, other than Bob Dylan. That in it's self is praise & testimoney to Paul Weller. Add this album to your collection and enjoy a rock n roll journey with Paul Weller who knows where it will lead?
