A Haunting Waltz

Waltz With Bashir is an unusual film indeed. It is not only an animation, but a documentary. It is not only a reflection on the Lebanese war and a careful examination of a solder's psychological trauma, but also a strangely beautiful reminder of man’s complete inhumanity to man. The film is emotionally well balanced. It would be very easy to make an animation about the Sabra and Shatila massacre a complete failure if the skill behind the production team was not highly sensitive to the complexities it is challenged with. Max Richter’s score embodies this high level of skill and compassion, lending a powerfully hunting and sombre touch to the film. For those who enjoy the film scores of Glass or Nyman should lend this an ear. Moody and beautiful.

Not as valuable as the film

The soundtrack is quite a mix of different tracks. I would recommend the film - it's a great animated collection of biographical narratives about various soldiers from the Lebanese war. It's quite tongue in cheek in parts but also very profound. I liked the contrast in the soundtrack but it is more suited to being heard over the animation rather than alone.

The Clash, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd...
