iTunes Review

Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl still believes in rock ‘n’ roll. He plays it with the same passion and commitment he brought to Nirvana and to his own group for the past two decades. To kick off the next decade, Grohl took his band into his garage and recorded this album to analog tape with ferocious results. The opening screams of “Bridge Burning” and the hard rock guitar riffs immediately establish that Foo Fighters are stepping up their game. The seductive pop harmonies still underpin the hooks, but the energy behind these tracks is a live wire. Hüsker Dü and Sugar frontman Bob Mould joins the group for “Dear Rosemary,” and former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic adds bass and accordion to two tracks. Nevermind producer, Butch Vig, produced the sessions, giving everything a vicious bite. Even the single, “Rope”, keeps its fangs. The songwriting is straightforward and powerful. “These Days” is the quiet before the storm as the songs builds to its own climax. Every track delivers what this band has always promised.

As it turns out, that’s exactly what Grohl’s Foo Fighters became, perhaps the one band of the alt-rock revolution to enjoy continual success on the charts and on the road without a dip in popularity. It...
