Fiction part II

Which is good because I think Fiction was an amazing DT album. We Are The Void certainly has a similar feel, but it has a lot to offer in its own right too. In fact I think some of DT's best songs are on this album (The Fatalist, Iridium). It has taken some criticism for not being a big enough leap from Fiction, but personally I don't mind if the songs are as brilliant as they are on here. DT create melodic death metal with a few gothic elements, perfectly demonstrated on W.A.T.V. I highly recommend this album, its one of 2010's best.

Best Album to date

I didnt think damage done could be beaten but ive listened to this a good 40 times and keep listening, seen the album peformed twice live too. Amazing! favourite tracks: Dream Obliviion and The Fatalist

A Good Release

Brief: Not as good as ‘Fiction’ but similar, has a few stunning tracks. A good solid album that will please many long time fans but is unlikely to create many converts. Buy: ‘The Fatalist’, ‘Her Silent Language’ and ‘Iridium’.
Full: This album starts off poorly, the first songs are just not up DT standard to be honest, they are really quite dull, so why ‘Shadow In Our Blood’ was chosen to have a video (which is equally not great) escapes me. The thing I dislike is the synths which are meant to sound all spooky but come of as a bit lacking. However there are some very good Schuldiner inspired riffs here.
Fortunately the album picks up rapidly after the second song, where DT go back to using the nice simple piano melody over catchy riffage. It is clear that there is a strong industrial influence on this album (listen to ‘Dream Oblivion’). It is clear from the remainder of this album that Dark Tranquillity are still a band to be reckoned with though they have certainly lost the influence that they, and so many other Gothenburg bands once had.
Other reviews from purists and elitists say this album is another album in the wrong direction. Take into account that these people only really like DT’s first 2 albums. The thing that I find so ironic is that quite a few of these songs have been in making for many years. ‘Iridium’ for example (which is one of my favourites) has been going since at least 1998 and was just never released. Good solid album, even though it doesn’t bring back the glory days it’s a decent output that DT fans should welcome.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Toward the end of the '90s, Scandinavian death metal — or at least one branch of it — began to evolve into a more accessible amalgamation of death metal intensity, a bit of progressive metal experimentation, and more traditional late-'70s/early-'80s British metal, with its catchy, groove-oriented riffs and twin-guitar lead lines. Although the style was hardly confined to one place, there was an especially fertile scene centered in the Swedish city of Gothenburg, and Dark Tranquillity...
