iTunes Review

Jason Mraz's third long player is more Michael Jackson than Jack Johnson this time around. "Make It Mine" introduces the album with a blue-eyed, soul-touched pop that sounds like Mraz has been blasting Off The Wall while en route to the beach. Fittingly, the beachy Colbie Callat duets on "Lucky" (a romantic ditty about falling for a best friend). The playfully perverted "Butterfly" floats with a lofty horn section and a Hall & Oates inspired strut as Mraz gets his seductive lyrics on before somehow pulling off a gutsy scat-singing solo that would make Jamiroquai's Jay Kay blush. Mraz picks up his almost forgotten acoustic guitar on the mellow "Live High" which sounds a bit like Josh Rouse with a groove. The rootsy and cutesy "I'm Yours" is an obvious choice for first single with it's reggae rhythms, doo-wop harmonies, electric jazz piano, and lyrics endearing enough to theme a high school prom, and then there's the all too perfect waltzing "Beautiful Mess" which could have been written for the sole purpose of slow dancing in a rented tux.

He's no Geek !

After following Mraz around over the past 7 years, it's great to see him finally start to get more recognition. This album is in many ways a side step but still a move forward. If you are listening to Jason for the first time, YOU NEED to see him live! He is a live performer and I have to say that the studio albums take away many of the aspects that I love about his spontaneous approach. For example, 'I'm Yours' and 'Gypsy' on the album are ANTHEMS when live with fantastic audiene participation, improvization by Jason and they just give you goosebumps leaving you with a glow of great feelings. Jason currently has dates for the UK in July, go see him, this is his playground.... for an insight, you can listen to the itunes London session. However, seek out many of the 'legal' recordings on the web which are endorsed by Jason. One in particular is the 'Prince of Wales' recording from Australia; such fantastic versions of Gypsy, I'm Yours, Rand McNally and so on.... enjoy !

Hmmmm....

Great album, but in my opinion Jason is at his best when a) performing live and b) when it's just him, Toca and his guitar. This sounds a bit too over-produced for my liking (although stand-out tracks for me are 'Butterfly', 'Love for a Child' and 'A Beautiful Mess'). 'If It Kills Me' is a beautiful, emotional acoustic bonus track, yet the album version sounds like something Robbie Williams might have rejected. So a little bit disappointing, but if you're a Jason fan it's still well worth the money.

Finally!

I have been waiting for AGES for this album to be released! I love Jason Mraz! Him past albums are amazing, and this one is no exception.
