Weezer's debut proved that the '90s alt-rock boom had considerably more going for it than Nirvana and other benefactors of Seattle scene hype. Indeed, fueled by a geek-appeal that was refreshingly organic, Rivers Cuomo and company delivered one of the decade's most assured debuts here. While so much of the decade's music revolved around specious angst and cheap intellectual irony, Cuomo's songs often had an insouciant charm that seemed equally rooted in '70s arena rock and '80s new wave, yielding the infectious singles in "Buddy Holly," "Undone (The Sweater Song)," and "Say It Ain't So." The band's easy way with melodies and hooks are also showcased on the standouts "In the Garage," "Surf Wax America," and "The World Has Turned and Left Me"-filled with one of the charms generally in short supply during the era: genuine innocence.

Hook filled guitar pop for the masses

While Nirvana and co. relied on angst and tidal wave guitars to propell their sounds, Deep South based Weezer tok a fresher more organic approach resulting on one of the decades best albums. Rivers Cumuo (singer/songwriter) demonstrates a clear talent for using big catchy riffs to have audiences bopping along for ages after the CD has finished spinning. This is personified most clearly with the insidiously catchy singles 'Buddy Holly', 'Say It Ain't So' and 'Undone-The Sweater Song' that mix these thunderstorm chrouses with the breezy hooks. It isn't all bunnies and sunshine, as angst is indentifyable in the satirical sarcasm of 'buddy Holly's lyrics. Even the album track standouts (The World has Turned and Left Me Here, In the Garage, Holiday) feel like hits waiting to happen. Though for the next six years Weezer would not scale the same dizzy heights, but here they shine forever. Truly one of my fave Weezer albums, wayy back from 1994-95.. The best standout track from the album has to be-- Say it ain't so.. Truly immortal is the line-- "Your drug is a heartbreaker... My love is a lifetaker..." Buy it..

this to me is the greatest record, EVER. i got it when i was 7 years old as a birthday gift from my brother (also a fan) and it's been my fave ever since, no lie. i'm 19 now.. so yea, buy it! you wont regret it!!
