Gil Scott-Heron’s 2010 release, I’m New Here was a terrific comeback album that showed Heron’s voice was still one of anti-authority power. His brilliant social observations that made a name for him back in the ‘70s are still here with the same determination. This remix album by Jamie of the xx is a suitable mash-up of that album’s sparse arrangements and jazzy spoken-word pieces. The extra beats and spacey keyboard bits make this an interstellar version of the original session. Gil Scott-Heron, by way of Jamie xx, goes electro-clash and into the dub chambers until the entire album sounds like a series of studio experiments that could’ve been birthed back in the ‘80s when the Clash, Public Image Ltd. and Brian Eno and David Byrne were discovering the uses of Jamaican dub and instrumental washes. The high weirdness here of “Ur Soul and Mine”, “I’m New Here”, “NY Is Killing Me” and “I’ll Take Care Of U” makes for hypnotic listening. But one should also be aware of Gil Scott Heron’s I’m New Here album. This album is meant as a companion piece to that release and makes far more sense in that context.

Finally

Been waiting for this album since it was announced towards the end of last year and i'm pleased to say it is as good I hoped it would be. Everything Jamie seems to touch at the moment is gold and accompanied with his clear respect for Gill and his work this album really does deliver. Beautiful and varied, this is a must buy. Peace.

I think i've been waiting six months for this record. It's a long time. Let's get one thing straight first of all though: 'I'm New Here' was one of my favourite records from last year, and has turned into one of my favourites overall. The words of that record have seeped into my conciousness over time, as rain runs into the ground. It struck a chord. So for that, my review is perhaps disgracefully biased. However, Jamie XX has done an exceptional job of re-mixing the album, bringing together the language and worlds of the two artists. Tracks such as 'Home' offer a new dimension to Scott's poetry, and indeed the poetry injects the electronica/dance with a new sense of purpose and depth. Its a great album, and whilst some may dismiss it as purely a remix, they are missing the point entirely.
