iTunes Review

The third release by Kasabian is a good mix of what originally earned the band a following and a brand new direction. Essentially, Kasabian is still an electro-rock band but they’ve widened their sound to include songwriting subtleties well beyond pounding dance-floor beats and fuzz bass as on “Fast Fuse”, “Thick As Thieves”, and “Fire,” which are all catchy without coming across as one-dimensional. Sure, the band still throws down some serious grooves (“Take Aim,” “Vlad the Impaler,” “Fire”), they just offset them with slower moments that almost veer into power-ballad territory (“Ladies and Gentlemen”, “Happiness”). Elsewhere there are loopy psychedelic touches, jagged guitar riffs, and enough catchy choruses to fill a stadium. The album is produced by Dan the Automator (of Gorillaz fame) who alternates between harsh (“Underdog”), clean (“Swarfiga”), and simply trippy backgrounds (“West Ryder Silver Bullet”), all of which fit snugly into the whole concept. All together, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is certainly the most varied, and arguably the best, Kasabian release so far.

Now I expected it to be good, but not this good

A keen Kasabian fan I've been waiting for this album pretty much since Fast Fuse was kicking around in the summer of 2007. Vlad the Impaler then appeared, a barmy but truly brilliant song, I heard Fire live and was impressed, not too keen on the single edit but it's grown on me. Then Underdog, I'll admit, on that Sony advert but another classic punchy, gritty and dark Kasabian song. I loved the first two albums, Empire especially, it was my favourite album of 2007. When listening to snippets here on iTunes I thought to myself, 'it's really good, worth my money'. But once I'd properly given it a full listen I am gobsmacked, this is a real surprise as to how fantastic it really is and the song that makes it for me is Thick As Thieves, sounds a bit like People Are Strange by The Doors but ignore the 'oh my god that's a copy' mob that resurfaced with Coldplay's Viva La Vida last year, it is a wonderful song. Not typical Kasabian, slower, sentimental but beautiful, I can imagine it whistling over valleys in the Med, it's enchanting. At this early stage I T.A.T along with Underdog, one of the best album openers I've heard in a long time are my favourites but this has 5 outstanding tunes, Take Aim is individually a 4 star song, one I will enjoy coming up on shuffle every couple of weeks and I feel that 2nd single Where Did All the Love Go? is going to grow on me bigtime. Having that range of bangers on one album makes this a hit, a huge hit and I hope it gives them the recognition that they deserve. To sum up, sorry Franz Ferdinand, the boys from Leicester have just swiped that album of the year title out of your hands and I doubt anyone else will do the same to Kasabian. By the way, for those who say that Kasabian are an Oasis copy you are very wrong. Oasis are still writing the same kind of songs they were writing in 1995, these boys though have now produced 3 totally different alternative rock albums and this one is the best yet, and Kasabian are way better live. 5 stars

West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum- Brilliant title, better album...

Kasabian have always impressed me. With two brilliant albums before this one, they made me a big fan. Their mix of electronica and rock had always intrigued me, but this album takes those two elements and adds a bit of 60's psychedelic music to create a truly brilliant album. West Ryder starts off with Underdog. This track epitomizes what Kasabian are all about, with a catchy guitar riff, shouty vocals and a little electronic break in the middle. Next comes the amazing Where Did All The Love Go?, which is probably my favourite song off of this album. After that there is the instrumental Swarfiga, which is alright, but nothing to shout about. Then comes the pulsuating Fast Fuse, which pulls you right in at the start of the song and doesn't disappoint. After that, we have the Serge sung Take Aim, which is probably one of the weaker tracks on the album, despite the verses sounding sinister. Then we have Thick As Thieves, which is another of my favourite tracks, starting off a series of songs that are quite mid-tempo. West Ryder Silver Bullet is another slower song, with a riff you would expect from a country artist. We then step up a gear again with the every electronic Vlad The Impaler, which is another of the albums highlights, with a surging bassline and catchy lyrics. The video to this song is also incredible, featuring Noel Fielding going around stabbing people with a stick. After that, we slow down again with Ladies And Gentleman (Roll The Dice), which is really quite a feel good song you could fall asleep to, with textured guitars and quiet vocals. Secret Alphabets is another highlight, with paranoid vocals, twangy guitar, a basic drumbeat and a smooth bassline. Then we have the hit single Fire, which is another brilliant song. The verses are slow, doing a brilliant job of leading you into the dance rock chorus which is bound to make festival crowds jump up and down. Happiness is a good closer, nothing more, nothing less. In conclusion, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum is the album of 2009 so far, and if you don't buy it, you're insane.

Simply the best.. :D

I have heard of Kasabian for quite a while now, but I only really listened to their songs in the past year.. Club Foot being the ultimate first, then Cutt Off, Shoot the Runner etc., and I loved this unique sound that they create!! It's just.. amazing really :D. Anyhow, I found out about this album about 2 months ago and have been slowly counting down the days until its realise. And what can I say? I'm not disappointed.. far from it. This is the best album I have listened to in my entire life and I'm sure Fast Fuse, Fire, Underdog and Vlad the Impaler are going to be classics just like their predeccessors. And the great thing is, they are ENGLISH!! :D Great sound, from a great band, from a great country with still bucketfulls of great music left to offer the world for a very long while yet.. and I can't wait! This is such a genius album and you will NOT be disappointed if you buy it! Have fun :)

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Leicester, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Kasabian took the British press by storm in the early 2000s by mixing traces of the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, and Primal Scream with Oasis-sized confidence and DJ Shadow-influenced electronics. Named after Linda Kasabian, Charles Manson's getaway driver turned state witness, the Leicester-based group also stole a page from the Band by moving into a remote farmhouse to brew its music. Communal life and a slew of shared influences produced an electronic, rock-oriented sound that harked back to the...
