Beautiful, Dark, Epic

What a fantastic album. I admit I was a little disappointed with My Winter Storm - it was listenable, but nothing struck me as special. Tarja's really upped her game with her second solo album which contains, in my opinion, her best song to date: Falling Awake. Passion has never been a problem with Tarja, and it really seems like she's put her all into the songs she's co-written/composed. Everything has been pushed to the limit here, the vocals, the lyrics, the orchestras, the sheer metal aspect. This Siren has far from lost her edge: she's showing that she isn't just a vocalist and a pretty face, her talents lie in composing and writing too. Her voice, as ever, is divine, particularly in I Feel Immortal. Other stand out tracks are Anteroom of Death (although judging by other reactions, this is a love it or hate it type of song) with its Alice in Wonderland feel and touch of frenzied insanity; Until My Last Breath, Little Lies and Naiad. There are two main styles of songs to choose from: piano-driven slower ones or bombastic, rifftastic ones. Despite this, the album doesn't have a repetitive feel to it at all. One criticism would be the harsher vocals of Phil Labonte in Dark Star. The soprano vocals and the screams don't mix very well together here, the screams sound like they were added over Tarja's vocals as an after-thought. I personally love the beauty and the beast vocal effect, done to perfection by bands like Epica and Tristania. I definitely think it would be interesting for Tarja to sing with more death metal vocalists in the future. To sum it up, What Lies Beneath is my favourite album of the year so far..although iTunes has yet to put up Kamelot's new CD for sale, and that's a serious contender for the title as well!

Simply Amazing

When I first realized that Tarja had a new album out I was overjoyed but when listening to the previews I wasn't convinced that this album was going to live up to My Winter Storm. I was completely wrong. The previews don't do justice to the songs in my opinion. They are beautiful, meaningful and addictive! Much better than most of the music around nowadays. I love this album and my favourite song would have to be I Feel Immortal, it credits Tarja's soul melting voice wonderfully, as do the others. There are all fantastic though.
Once again she's done it.

give it a few listens

After a few listens i am turned.. This is a really good album. There is a lot of energy in the album.. it feels like this is the real tarja, its very different to her first album but now i feel its like she knows what she wants and here she delivers. Its not everyones cup of tea but if you are a fan of tarja you will love it.
