Album Review

Denmark native Sannie Charlotte Carlson (she uses the name Whigfield as a tribute to a former teacher) released her debut album Whigfield in 1995 (the album saw American release a year later), and several of its songs became European dancefloor favorites. "Think of You," "Another Day," and (especially) "Saturday Night" are silly, adequately performed fluff, but irresistibly catchy fluff. While Whigfield's brand of lightweight, bubblegum dance-pop is far from original, her charming, here-goes-nothing delivery blends well with the disco-influenced arrangements, and the result is engaging dancefloor fodder. Whigfield stumbles considerably on a few of the album's tracks. The ballads "Don't Walk Away" and "Close to You" just don't work; she doesn't have the voice to pull them off, and neither fits well among the dance tunes that make up the rest of the album. And the faux-reggae of "Big Time" makes Ace of Base sound like Bob Marley. But Whigfield is primarily a dance-pop album, and within this context, it succeeds. [Import versions of this release are worth searching for, as some include remixes, as well as an 18-minute-long "Whigfield Megamix."]

Oh, no no no! I have to disagree with the main review about Close Tou You and Don't Walk Away - both are amazing spine tingling tracks, Don't Walk Away is very atmospheric and mysterious sounding and Close Tou You is a sweeping piano classic (It was also a single in the UK). I can't believe it's been 10 whole years since this album was released...It always annoys me how "Saturday Night" is the only song anyone seems ro remember by Whigfield (Another Day, Think Of You, Big Time and Close To You were also released). This album is just pure pick me up music, I still love it even now and it's a shame that they stopped releasing songs in the UK after this album, when she released another THREE in Europe each of which is more polished than the last. Wheras alot of people think Whigfield is all just bubblegum pop, she also has just as many dance songs, many of which are better than alot of stuff coming out now (particularly on Whigfield 4). If You like dance music you should check out some of her other albums particularly the tracks "No Tears To Cry", "Much More", "Was A Time" and "My Love's Gone".

Euro-dance star Whigfield was born Sannie Charlotte Carlson in Skaelskør, Denmark, and spent some time in Africa as a child. Finding her initial career of modeling horribly dull, she returned to her first love of music, and began performing with her brother's band. Seeking more opportunities, she left Denmark and met Spagna producer Larry Pignagnoli, with whom she began recording under the name Whigfield (a tribute to her piano teacher of the same name). Her debut single, "Saturday Night," hit number...
