Album Review

As the story goes, what was originally intended to be a mere piano and vocal bedroom recording of material that was deemed too balladic for Dresden Dolls' albums became an epic project by a twist of fate. After Ben Folds contacted Amanda Palmer by e-mail to randomly tell her that he was a fan of her music, they made plans to play some shows in Australia, where, upon meeting, the two wry-humored piano bashers found they shared a lot in common. He offered her future use of his Nashville studio, and once she accepted, he put on the producer hat and started taking the once raw songs to new heights with extensive layering. Along with Folds, who played keyboards and percussion himself, East Bay Ray of the Dead Kennedys, Annie Clark of St. Vincent, a horn section, cellist Zoe Keating, and a children's choir were all recruited to help round out the songs. Who Killed Amanda Palmer isn't a hugely drastic departure from the established Dresden Dolls formula with Brian Viglione; strangely, even with the added orchestrated bells and whistles, it's actually very similar sounding to their stripped-down sound as a two-piece.

Outstanding!

I'll make this brief otherwise I'd run out of words in praise of this album. Even if you're not a fan of the Dresden Dolls, the sheer winestained beauty of this album will blow you away. This is classy, emotional and very very intelligent stuff which transcends genres. Yes Amanda Palmer is gorgeous and sassy...but this album proves that as well as a consumate performer she's a top notch song writer worthy of accolades usually reserved for people like Tom Waits, Nick Cave or Bob Dylan...wonderful. Just buy it and cherish it for ever!

Pure gold from AFP

I came across Amanda being a huge Ben Folds fan - generally speaking anything he is involved or associated with is at least worthy of a listen. I brought the album without having a clue who Amanda was or having even heard any of the Dresden Dolls material - sorry for being backwards! On the very first listen I wasn't too sure as I really didn't know what to expect and the wall of noise I was listening to was quite full on, but after after a few plays, the brilliance and beauty of what I was listening to began to sink in. The lyrics are so clever and Amanda's voice is just unique. Ampersand is just a glorious track and Have to Drive is similalry mesmorising. Astronaut is a wonderful opener the then bam, Runs in the Family hits you right between the eyes with some of the cleverest lyrics you can imagine. Great albums remain strong throughout and compel you to play them over and over again - this is definately falls into that catagory and is one which I will treasure forever. All of the tracks are strong throughout. I have gone onto explore the Dresden Dolls catalogue and am now a huge admirer of Amanada and her unique talent. I can understand why Ben Folds was compelled to write her fan mail. Just brilliant music from a truely talented artist.

An amazing album

I was turned on to Amanda Palmer via the Dresden Dolls and I've been listening to her solo album over and over since buying it. The range of styles and moods on the album is breathtaking and there isn't a single duff mood note, mood or lyric throughout. Virtually every song is a stand out track although I'm particularly keen on the opener Astronaut as well as the hauntingly beautiful Strength Through Music. Mind you, Leeds United is pretty wonderful too. I can't praise this album highly enough for its vigour, its energy and its musical intelligence. Do yourself a favour and check this out.
