Album Review
On the surface, Wish sounds happier than Disintegration, and the sunny British Invasion hooks of the hit single "Friday I'm in Love" certainly seem to indicate that the record is a brighter affair than its predecessor. Dig a little deeper and the album reveals itself to be just as tortured, and perhaps more despairing. Granted, the sound of the record, with its jangling guitars and simple arrangements, is more immediately accessible than the epic gloom of Disintegration, but nearly every song finds Robert Smith wracked with depression. Unfortunately, the even-handed production makes the record sound very similar, so it is less compelling than it might have been, but there are a handful of gems ("High," "A Letter to Elise," "Wendy Time," "Friday I'm in Love") that make the record worthwhile.
Customer Reviews
A little bit of sweet misery. Much under-rated.
The hours I must have listened to Robert Smith singing his sweet misery to me..., and I still can't get enough of this album. I re-bought it after my original 13 year old tape finally succumbed and went to the big tape heaven in the sky. It's got everything you could possible wish for; pop-esque tunes like "Friday I'm in Love" and "High", to epic misery ballads such as "Apart" and "End". There are also a few suprises as well, for example, I had forgotten how much in love with "Doing the Unstuck" I was, with the lyrics "...tear out the pages with all the bad news... ...let's get happy!" jumping out of your hi-fi and smacking you in the face. All excellent stuff, and I love it!
Wow, This Is The Most Under-Rated Album Ever (Possibly)
This album is a true great album in 'The Cure' set of masterpieces, Disintegration is the obvious choice for their best album. But to be honest I may put this ahead of Disintegration, purely because High, Apart and From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea are all so good. None of the songs on this album dissapoint (Seriously). If you havn't got this album, WHY!, rating 5 star isn't me being generous, it's me being harsh. Thats how highly I rate this album. I hope you are of the same oppinion. I hope this review has been of help - SJP - Thanks for reading :)
Possibly the best of a very good bunch
There are so many good Cure albums, I struggle to pick a favourite, but this is probably it. From the start it rises and falls in pace and feeling. The universally popular "Friday I'm in Love" brought the band mass airplay and introduced them to the 90's, and it fits in nicely to the middle of the album. Thats how this album works, each song is complimented by those either side, and at each end you've literally got an opening and an ending. If you've not got this in your collection - get it and listen - it is as a complete package you will find in terms of song position and construction, and I for one will never tire of it.
